Job Description

The Biology/Chemistry lab assistant will assist with laboratory preparation by cleaning and maintaining laboratory equipment, and perform related duties.

Job Duties and

Key Responsibilities
  • Abide by Safety Procedures & Policies as detailed in the JJC Chemical Hygiene Plan.
  • Prepare laboratory materials for all Biology and Chemistry courses.
  • Prepare media for Microbiology labs, including operating the autoclave and practicing aseptic techniques.
  • Maintain aquariums, plants, lab animals, and other living specimens.
  • Maintain cadavers.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment and supplies, including cleaning, storage, and inventories.
  • Maintain classrooms and general lab clean‑up.
  • Prepare chemical solutions and observe proper handling and disposal of hazardous materials.
  • Work 10‑20 hours per week, Monday through Friday between 8:00 am and 4:00 pm.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Minimum Qualifications
    • Enrolled at JJC for 6 or more credit hours.
    • GPA of 2.0 or above.
    • Complete previous coursework in Biology and/or Chemistry.
    • Be able to work well with others.
    • Be able to communicate effectively.
    • Have the ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with other members of the college and community, displaying cultural competence and emotional intelligence.
    Preferred Qualifications
    • English and Spanish verbal and written communication proficiency.
    • Demonstrated multicultural competence.
    Physical Demands

    Some moderate lifting required.

    Working Conditions

    Duties are performed indoors in the usual office and/or outdoor environment.

    Scheduled Weekly Hours

    This is a student employee position that works around the class schedule. May work up to 20 hours per week during the fall and spring semesters, and up to 28 hours per week during summer and holiday breaks with supervisor approval.
