Life Skills Special Education Teacher
Job Summary:
The Middle School Life Skills Teacher provides instruction to students with special needs, focusing on developing functional academic, social, communication, and independent living skills. The teacher creates a structured, supportive environment that promotes student growth, self-advocacy, and successful participation in school and community settings.
Key Responsibilities:
* Develop and implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) in collaboration with special education teams.
* Provide direct instruction in daily living skills, social skills, communication, and functional academics.
* Differentiate instruction to meet a wide range of learning, behavioral, and physical needs.
* Use data to monitor student progress and adjust instruction accordingly.
* Collaborate with general education teachers, therapists, and support staff.
* Teach and reinforce appropriate behavior and self-regulation strategies.
* Facilitate vocational exploration and pre-employment skill development when appropriate.
* Maintain accurate documentation and ensure compliance with special education laws and policies.
* Communicate regularly with families regarding student progress and needs.
Qualifications:
* Bachelor's degree in Special Education or related field.
* Valid state teaching license/certification in Special Education.
* Experience working with students with moderate to severe disabilities preferred.
* Strong classroom management, collaboration, and communication skills.
Work Environment:
Classroom, community-based instruction sites, and school settings that may require physical assistance for students, including lifting or mobility support.
