Senior Engineer - Substation Engineering

This position is for a Civil or Electrical Engineer in the Substation Engineering Services Department located in Plainfield, IN.

• Provide engineering/technical expertise and guidance in identifying, analyzing, and resolving problems of increasing scope and complexity.
• Contribute to team decision‑making in achieving business goals through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling, and monitoring of work activities.
• Handle changing priorities and differing situations, making decisions that may affect team work.
• Prepare thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations, and sketches related to well‑defined problems and analyses.
• Conduct engineering and related studies.
• Complete routine engineering projects with minimal oversight, progressively managing project schedules and interfaces independently.
• Provide technical oversight to contracted engineering resources.
• Apply fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures, and maintain technical and analytical competencies.
• Develop positive working relationships to coordinate work activities effectively.
• Demonstrate effective verbal and written communication skills.
• Maintain accurate records and files, supporting the company’s goals and representing the company positively and professionally.

• Bachelor of Science in Engineering from a four‑year college or university with an ABET‑accredited program, or state registration as a Professional Engineer.
• Master’s degree in engineering accepted in lieu of a Bachelor’s degree.
• Minimum 6 years of engineering experience, or 5 years with state registration as a Professional Engineer.
• Valid driver’s license.

• Bachelor of Science in Civil or Electrical Engineering.
• Passing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals Exam.
• Professional Engineer registration.
• Increasing proficiency in project management principles.
• Experience in the utility industry.
• Department‑specific experience applicable to the hiring department.
• Advanced application of engineering theories and principles.
• Proficiency in researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, preparing, and presenting recommendations.
• Strong written and oral communication skills.
• Proficiency in AutoCAD, Inventor, and 3D lidar.

• Corporate office environment.
• Occasional meetings in the substation environment.

Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. Hybrid employees should live within a reasonable daily commute to the posted Duke Energy facility. This position will also be expected to work in the office and perform field work.
