The Administrative Captain performs advanced responsible correctional duties in supervising correctional personnel in charge of inmates. Under general supervision, is responsible for directing the activities of several correctional and special officers engaged in maintaining order and discipline. Agency regulations and instructions from a supervisor dictate the manner of work, but the nature and variety of responsibilities require continuous exercise of independent judgment and resourcefulness.

Performs duties of positions in other areas for the purpose of cross-training.

Primary duties and responsibilities include:

• Assisting in the development and implementation of policies, procedures and regulations for custody, security, and/or treatment of inmates.
• Responding to major unusual occurrences. Facilitating prompt and appropriate assistance to inmates in the event of injury, illness, or emotional trauma.
• Promoting an atmosphere conducive to personality and character development of inmates and staff through the encouragement of favorable behavior patterns, arrangement of physical facilities, and influencing relationships among inmates.
• Directing the work of other employees. This includes the selection, hiring, evaluating job performance, employee training/development, promoting and any disciplinary action, including termination. Maintaining oversight of the inmate discipline process ensuring compliance with client/agency procedures.
• Assisting in training facility staff in matters of inmate discipline.
• Making assignments, reviewing post orders, and assuring that all procedures, including emergency procedures are in place and staff is trained in proper implementation.
• Reviewing disciplinary matters concerning both staff and inmates.
• Reviewing staff effectiveness and conducting frequent physical inspections of the facility to ensure compliance with policies and procedures.
• Giving primary guidance on situational problems, making referrals for more complex problems.
• Preparing records and reports as assigned by management. Maintaining daily logs as required.
• Being responsible for attaining facility goals/objectives and ensuring compliance with all rules, regulations, policies, and/or procedures for security operations.
• Directing work, providing training and performing inspections of work performed by inmate staff. May provide inmate supervision and security in other areas as needed.
• Performing other duties as assigned.

Minimum requirements include:

• High school diploma or equivalent certification required.
• College coursework and advanced training in behavioral sciences, correctional services, or related field preferred.
• Three (3) years of experience working in a correctional setting, one of which was in a position requiring supervisory capabilities.
• Must be mature, flexible, intellectually alert, able to command the respect and confidence of inmates and staff and possess a high tolerance to mental stress.
