The Administrative Captain performs advanced responsible correctional duties in supervising correctional personnel in charge of inmates. Under general supervision, they are responsible for directing the activities of several correctional and special officers engaged in maintaining order and discipline. Agency regulations and instructions from a supervisor dictate the manner of work, but the nature and variety of responsibilities require continuous exercise of independent judgment and resourcefulness.

Performs duties of positions in other areas for the purpose of cross‑training.

• The Administrative Captain assists in the development and implementation of policies, procedures and regulations for custody, security, and/or treatment of inmates.
• The Administrative Captain responds to major unusual occurrences, facilitating prompt and appropriate assistance to inmates in the event of injury, illness, or emotional trauma.
• Promotes an atmosphere conducive to personality and character development of inmates and staff through the encouragement of favorable behavior patterns, arrangement of physical facilities, and influencing relationships among inmates.
• The Administrative Captain directs the work of other employees, including selection, hiring, evaluating job performance, employee training/development, promotion, and any disciplinary action, including termination. They maintain oversight of the inmate discipline process ensuring compliance with client/agency procedures.
• Assists in training facility staff in matters of inmate discipline.
• Makes assignments, reviews post orders, and ensures all procedures, including emergency procedures, are in place and staff is trained in proper implementation.
• Reviews disciplinary matters concerning both staff and inmates.
• Reviews staff effectiveness and conducts frequent physical inspections of the facility to ensure compliance with policies and procedures.
• Provides primary guidance on situational problems, making referrals for more complex problems.
• Prepares records and reports as assigned by management, maintaining daily logs as required.
• Ensures facility goals/objectives and compliance with all rules, regulations, policies, and/or procedures for security operations.
• Directs work, provides training, and performs inspections of work performed by inmate staff. May provide inmate supervision and security in other areas as needed.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements:

• High school diploma or equivalent certification required.
• College coursework and advanced training in behavioral sciences, correctional services, or related field preferred.
• Three (3) years of experience working in a correctional setting, including at least one year in a supervisory role.
• Must be mature, flexible, intellectually alert, able to command the respect and confidence of inmates and staff, and possess a high tolerance to mental stress.
