Fire Protection Inspector – Plainfield City.

The Queen City is a special charter form of government comprised of 6.034 square miles and a population of 57,141 (2025 U.S. Census Bureau estimate), with a 2026 municipal budget of $119 million. The position of Fire Protection Inspector is available immediately. The City is seeking a qualified, experienced professional with strong technical, analytical, and communication skills. The ideal applicant will be a detail-oriented team member who can review fire protection plans, conduct field inspections, and work effectively with contractors, property owners, and other municipal officials.

The Fire Protection Inspector is responsible for reviewing plans and performing fire protection inspection work to enforce the State Uniform Construction Code, the fire protection subcode, and relevant fire protection laws within the jurisdiction. The candidate must be able to demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of fire protection systems design, fire suppression and detection/alarm system requirements, fire resistance ratings, means of egress, and the organization and content of the Uniform Construction Code and fire protection subcode.

In addition, the ideal candidate shall be able to examine and approve construction plans, determine the cause of code violations and take corrective action, and prepare clear, accurate inspection reports.

Qualifications
  • Possession of a valid license as a Fire Protection Inspector of the appropriate level, Industrial and Commercial (ICS) or High-Rise and Hazardous (HHS), issued by the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs.
  • Thorough knowledge of the organization and content of the Uniform Construction Code and fire protection subcode, classification of structures into class categories, and systems design and installation practices for active/passive fire suppression, fire detection, and fire alarm systems.
  • Knowledge of fire resistance ratings of structural components, height and area limitations, arrangement and sizing of means of egress, combustibility of materials, and requirements for chimneys, flues, vents, and heating equipment.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze and interpret the Uniform Construction Code and to examine and approve plans for compliance with the fire protection subcode.
  • For HHS-level applicants, knowledge of fire protection material and testing requirements, code provisions related to fire divisions and unlimited area buildings, and design analysis methods for class I structures.
  • Proven ability to compile factual fire safety data and prepare clear, sound, accurate, and detailed inspection reports containing findings, conclusions, and recommendations.
  • Ability to provide testimony in court to prosecute violations as required.
  • Ability to maintain essential records and files.
  • Possession of a valid New Jersey driver's license, if operation of a vehicle is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
  • Residence within a reasonable commuting distance of Plainfield is preferred.
  • Resume and References outlining and describing a candidate's experience and successes in Fire Inspections will be required.

Part-time $39.48 - $50.64
