Substitute Nurse

The duties of the school nurse include providing nursing health services to students and staff during the instructional school day and school year and any additional days beyond the instructional school year as defined in the nurse contract. The primary function of the School Nurse is to promote and maintain the highest standard of student health within the school setting.

• Assess and evaluate the health status of each student in order to make a nursing diagnosis and establish a health plan.
• Interpret the health status and medical findings to the student, parent and staff responsible for the child.
• Guide those persons responsible for the student’s health toward appropriate health/medical resources and provide medical counseling where appropriate.
• Serve as a health consultant and resource person by providing current information from medical nursing and related fields.
• Serve as liaison between the parents, school and community in health matters.
• Provide a nursing diagnosis and evaluation as needed on health and hygiene issues.
• Observe students, as needed, to detect health problems/issues.
• Maintain confidentiality of student and family health information.
• Assume responsibility to render emergency care to a student or staff member when injured or ill.
• Perform other assigned duties and responsibilities as directed by administration.
