The Queen City is a special charter form of government comprised of 6.034 square miles and a population of 57,141 (2025 U.S. Census Bureau estimate), with a 2026 municipal budget of $119 million. The position of Plumbing Inspector is available immediately. The City is seeking a qualified, experienced professional with strong technical, analytical, and communication skills. The ideal applicant will be a detail-oriented team member who can review plumbing plans, conduct field inspections, and work effectively with contractors, business proprietors, and property owners.
The Plumbing Inspector is responsible for performing plumbing inspection work to enforce relevant public health laws and the plumbing subcode within the jurisdiction. The candidate must be able to demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of plumbing inspection methods, plumbing installation practices, and plumbing fixture requirements. In addition, the ideal candidate shall be able to receive and examine plans for plumbing work, determine the cause of violations and take corrective action, and prepare clear, accurate inspection reports.
Qualifications:
- Possession of a valid license as a Plumbing Inspector of the appropriate level, Industrial and Commercial (ICS) or High-Rise and Hazardous (HHS), issued by the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs.
- Thorough knowledge of plumbing inspection methods, plumbing installation methods, and plumbing fixtures and fixture requirements.
- Demonstrated ability to interpret relevant public health laws and apply them to specific cases.
- Proven ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with business proprietors, contractors, and others interested in the maintenance of public health standards.
- Ability to prepare clear, sound, and informative reports of inspections containing findings, conclusions, and recommendations.
- Ability to provide testimony in court to prosecute violations as required.
- Ability to maintain essential records and files.
- Possession of a valid New Jersey driver's license, if operation of a vehicle is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
- Residence within a reasonable commuting distance of Plainfield is preferred.
Resume and References outlining and describing a candidate's experience and successes in Plumbing Inspections will be required.
Part-Time $39.48 - $50.64
