Product Development Drafter (Mechanical / Electrical)

Location:

Plainview, NY

Compensation: $75,000 - $85,000

We are seeking a detail-oriented Product Development Drafter to support the design, development, and manufacturing of highly engineered products. This position works closely with engineering teams to create, revise, and maintain technical drawings, assembly documentation, Bills of Materials (BOMs), and engineering change documentation throughout the product lifecycle.

This role is best suited for candidates who have supported product development and manufacturing environments, where physical products are designed, tested, and produced. Candidates with experience from engineering-driven organizations in aerospace, defense, electronics, industrial equipment, automation, transportation, or similar industries are highly encouraged to apply.

Please Note:

This is not a construction, architectural, civil, MEP, or building design drafting position. Experience developing engineered products and assemblies is required.

Key Responsibilities Engineering Drawings & Documentation
  • Create and revise detailed mechanical and electrical assembly drawings using AutoCAD and other CAD tools.
  • Develop complete drawing packages from engineering sketches, concepts, specifications, and design notes.
  • Produce fabrication drawings, assembly drawings, wiring diagrams, schematics, layouts, and manufacturing documentation.
  • Add dimensions, tolerances, tables, notes, and specifications to existing drawings.
Product Development Support
  • Collaborate with engineers throughout the product development cycle, from initial concept through production release.
  • Support prototype, development, testing, and manufacturing efforts by maintaining accurate engineering documentation.
  • Verify dimensions, material specifications, and assembly requirements to ensure manufacturability and design accuracy.
  • Research and identify mechanical and electrical components that meet project requirements.
BOM & Change Management
  • Create, maintain, and update Bills of Materials (BOMs).
  • Process Engineering Change Notices (ECNs) and Engineering Change Orders (ECOs).
  • Update drawings and documentation to reflect approved design changes.
  • Maintain drawing revisions and document histories within established configuration control processes.
Quality & Compliance
  • Ensure all drawings and technical documentation comply with engineering standards and quality procedures.
  • Review documentation for completeness, accuracy, and consistency.
  • Support document control and configuration management activities.
  • Maintain accurate engineering records and controlled technical data packages.
Required Qualifications
  • 3+ years of drafting experience in a product development, engineering, or manufacturing environment.
  • Strong proficiency with AutoCAD.
  • Experience creating and modifying mechanical and/or electrical assembly drawings.
  • Experience developing and maintaining Bills of Materials (BOMs).
  • Experience processing Engineering Change Notices (ECNs) and Engineering Change Orders (ECOs).
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, technical specifications, and manufacturing documentation.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Visio.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work cross-functionally with engineering and manufacturing teams.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience supporting the design and development of engineered products.
  • Solid Works or other 3D CAD experience.
  • Electro-mechanical drafting experience.
  • Experience working within regulated or quality-driven manufacturing environments.
  • Familiarity with configuration management, document control, and revision management processes.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing methods, materials, and engineering drawing standards.
Ideal Candidate Profile

The strongest candidates will come from companies that design and manufacture products rather than buildings or facilities. Examples of relevant experience include:

  • Aerospace and defense products
  • Electronics and electrical equipment
  • Industrial machinery and automation systems
  • Transportation equipment
  • Electro-mechanical assemblies
  • Manufacturing equipment
  • Custom engineered products
  • Prototype and production design environments

Candidates should be comfortable working directly with engineers to transform concepts, sketches, and design changes into accurate manufacturing documentation that supports real-world product development and production.
