Overview
Provides program support in coordination of the Helen Kaplan Program ICF. Ensures staff training on the individual’s health and well-being, and creates, updates and trains on agency policy. Works in compliance with OPWDD regulation for individuals residing in intermediate care facilities while providing for optimal health of individuals.
Responsibilities- Assist with medication pourings for the HKP ICF AMAP staff, including completion and assessment of competency checklists for vital signs;
Diastat, Epipen, tube feeding, and insulin administration, etc. - Collaborate with the HKP Assistant Director of Nursing to create, obtain, and complete a weekly schedule of AMAP pourings pending for the program.
- Ensure CPR and OPWDD nurse training classes for each nurse are completed and updated as required; assist in training new nurses.
- Train and retrain AMAP staff regarding the health of the individuals served, including writing and training on guidelines and updating plans of nursing to ensure staff understanding and compliance.
- Collaborate with the Assistant Director of Nursing to create, obtain, and complete a weekly schedule of new trainings and retrainings pending for the program.
- Function as a float nurse during nursing vacancies/time off, including overseeing a caseload when necessary.
- Assist in creating new nursing policies and procedures for the HKP ICF when needed and revise current policies and procedures; responsible for training on policies; participate in the Policy Review Committee.
- Confers with the HKP Assistant Director of Nursing as needed to exchange information, receive instructions, and offer updates.
- Spot check MARs and nursing documentation.
- Confer with the HKP ICF team to discuss present individuals’ medical status as needed and to ensure ongoing communication and training of pertinent information.
- Attend Nursing staff meetings and management meetings, as needed, to communicate medical information and seek recommendations to improve AMAP oversight and medical care to HKP ICF individuals.
- Confer with medical providers (pharmacies, psychologists, lab supply vendors, and physicians) by telephone and via scheduled meetings to ensure delivery of quality and cost-effective health care services.
- Support and participate in on-call system; create on-call schedule and guidelines.
- Participate in meetings regarding screening new potential admissions.
- Oversee and assist in coordinating hospital discharges.
- Maintain statistics on all individual hospitalizations as a means of utilization review.
- Order all supplies for the program including tube feeding supplies and over-the-counter medications.
- Assist HKP Assistant Director of Nursing with Nursing schedule.
- Complete weekly rounds with Medical Director in the absence of the RN.
- Adhere to all regulations, agency policy, procedures, the employee handbook, and agency and program training requirements.
- Report to Justice Center as a mandated reporter if there is reasonable cause to suspect abuse, neglect, or a potentially hazardous work environment; follow all agency incident policy and procedures.
- Ensure that work-related safety procedures are in place and are being adhered to by staff.
- This position requires regular and substantial unsupervised or unrestricted physical contact with people receiving services and, therefore, is subject to successful completion of fingerprint/criminal background check.
- Practice and promote the agency’s mission statements in every interaction.
- Ensure that work-related safety procedures are in place and observed; report unsafe acts or hazardous conditions to a supervisor or safety committee.
- Arrive to work by the start of the scheduled shift and adhere to policy on call offs and overtime to ensure quality support is provided to people each day.
- Perform additional related tasks and special projects as requested by your supervisor.
- NYS Registered Nurse license.
- 3 years of experience in clinical nursing working with the developmentally disabled; supervisory experience preferred.
- Current CPR training/certification required.
