Trades Generalist

Overview

Trades Generalists perform a variety of skilled and semi‑skilled maintenance, repair, installation, and construction tasks in the mechanical, building, motor equipment, and electrical trades. They may work from detailed plans or rough sketches, sometimes following oral instructions, and can operate with considerable independence.

• Perform carpentry duties, including installation and repair of flooring; repair and adjustment of doors and hardware; stairs; railings; and replacement of ceiling tile.
• Carry out minor electrical tasks such as replacing receptacles, light fixtures, and circuit breakers.
• Repair, install, and maintain plumbing fixtures and appliances, including sinks, showers, baths, commodes, dishwashers, and water and drainage distribution systems.
• Execute painting tasks: prepare surfaces, prime, and paint.
• Carry out maintenance and preventive maintenance on mechanical equipment such as bathroom exhaust fans, clothes dryers, sump pumps, and generators.
• Travel daily within the district; additional travel within NY State may be required for special projects.

• Working knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the assigned trade(s).
• Knowledge of safety standards and procedures.
• Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
• Experience training and supervising others.
• Training in operation and maintenance procedures related to asbestos‑containing materials.
• Ability to plan and lay out work, develop time and material lists for projects assigned.
• Ability to read and interpret plans, codes, diagrams, architectural blueprints, and specifications.
• Basic computer skills preferred.
• Valid NYS driver’s license.

• Four years of full‑time experience in a trade under a skilled tradesperson, providing training equivalent to an apprenticeship or technical schooling.
• For motor vehicle operation, a valid New York State driver’s license appropriate for the vehicle type.
