Job Details

The successful candidate may be offered a position in either the Building Inspector or Senior Building Inspector classification. The hourly range for the Building Inspector is $24.89 - $28.63 and the hourly rate for the Senior Building Inspector position is $27.45 – $31.57.

The City of Plano's Building Inspections Department seeks a Building Inspector to join our team. A State of Texas Plumbing Inspector license is preferred but not required. This department is ICC-accredited and focused on providing outstanding service to Plano citizens.

Plano hosts many major companies and offers opportunities to learn and develop in Building Inspection across various development projects.

Typical schedule:

7:00am - 3:30pm, Monday–Friday. Rotating on-call list includes nights, weekends, and holidays (every five weeks; for emergency issues only).

Responsibilities (Examples of Essential Job Functions)
  • Inspect residential, commercial, multi-family, and other buildings for life-safety standards and compliance with building codes.
  • Review and interpret construction plans, specifications, architectural and engineering drawings for enforcement of state/local codes.
  • Perform inspections including zoning, yard location, footing, foundation, framing, and code compliance.
  • Verify conformance with adopted International Codes, construction documents, and City Code of Ordinances.
  • Maintain project files for inspections (soil, concrete tests, steel, welding, etc.).
  • Explain regulations to builders and property owners to aid compliance with plans and standards.
  • Stay updated on current trends in construction and building codes at state and national levels.
  • Document inspection results clearly and accurately; maintain inspection records using computer or IPad.
  • Work independently, manage time and inspection routes; handle construction complaints from the public.
  • Communicate effectively with peers, supervisors, and citizens; comply with City/department policies.
  • Contribute to a professional team environment; deliver quality, timely work outcomes; maintain regular attendance.
Qualifications (Building Inspector)
  • Knowledge: National, regional, and City building codes and ordinances.
  • Skill: Effective verbal and written communication.
  • Education: High school diploma or GED.
  • Experience: One (1) year of experience conducting inspections of construction projects.
  • Substitution:
    Any work experience offering acceptable proficiency may substitute for education/experience as allowed.
  • Licenses/Certifications: Texas Class C driver’s license (within 30 days of hire); ICC Residential Energy Inspector/Plans Examiner – 79 (within 1 year); ICC Residential Building Inspector – B1 (within 1 year);
    Texas plumbing inspector license preferred.
Senior Building Inspector

Summary of Duties: Under general supervision, conducts on-site inspections to ensure code compliance.

Distinguishing Characteristics: Advanced journey-level classification. Plans methods to attain objectives; works under indirect supervision; may provide guidance to others.
