Position Summary

A Senior Fire Engineer in our Business sector designs complex advanced building systems, prepares design documents, performs engineering calculations, and leads teams. The role includes business development, corporate operations and risk management activities, mentorship, and potential Engineer of Record responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Directs and oversees the preparation of design documents, system layouts, detailed drawings, schematics and specifications.
  • Leads project and design efforts from concept design through completion.
  • Reviews shop drawings for conformance to plans and specifications.
  • Performs research, makes recommendations regarding feasibility of systems or equipment, and evaluates products.
  • Develops solutions to complex engineering problems and design challenges.
  • Ensures that drawings, specifications, reports and analyses meet scope, schedule, cost and quality requirements.
  • Advices and mentors less experienced designers and engineers; provides oversight and technical guidance.
  • Recommends project staffing and directs activities of technical and administrative staff.
  • Continually develops and expands personal and team knowledge.
  • Assists Technical Managers and Directors with establishing and implementing goals, policies, objectives and standards.
  • Influences development of tools, resources and company practices.
  • Implements design and engineering standards at the team or practice level.
  • Oversees project quality through reviews and check‑ins, providing final reviews for projects under purview.
  • Builds and maintains relationships with strategic partners and customers to expand business opportunities.
  • Participates in client, company and industry events to build and maintain professional relationships.
  • Fosters client‑centric mindset within the team.
  • Communicates with clients regarding requirements and scope of work and maintains proactive communications throughout the project cycle.
  • Anticipates and answers questions from clients and architects; acts as a resource in fact‑finding.
  • Visits job sites to verify existing conditions and observe construction progress.
  • Resolves conflicts involving owners, architects, and contractors as needed.
  • Identifies and fills gaps in industry or discipline knowledge; stays current with emerging technologies, trends and codes.
  • Shares information and suggestions for technical and process improvements with peers and leaders.
  • Applies Henderson’s design guidelines, standards, policies and procedures.
  • Performs project management responsibilities, coordinating scope, schedule, design team, client meetings and delivery.
  • Maintains high standards associated with holding a PE license and being enabled as an Engineer of Record.
  • May be enabled as an Engineer of Record with oversight for overall signing and sealing of the project.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant engineering field (mechanical, electrical, fire protection, architectural) preferred; high school diploma or equivalent required.
  • 12 years of relevant experience (or high school diploma/equivalent) required.
  • PE license required; may count toward one year of experience.
  • Additional certifications/accreditations (BEMP, CPD, CDP, NICET, RCDD, etc.) required.
  • Completion of Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam preferred.
  • Certifications related to sustainability (CDP, LEED, WELL, etc.) preferred.
  • Expert knowledge and proficiency in engineering design, codes, guidebooks, standards.
  • Working knowledge of earned value, contracts and construction processes.
  • Working knowledge of Revit and Bluebeam Revu.
  • High technical aptitude and ability to train others on systems and processes.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong critical thinking and problem‑solving skills.
  • Team-oriented, collaborative, and independent work capability.
  • Adaptability to changing work environments, priorities and organizational needs.
  • Ability to prioritize, execute and direct multiple tasks dynamically.
  • Openness to give and receive constructive feedback.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and relevant engineering software.
  • Self‑starter, proactive, capable of teaching and managing others.
