An SMT (Surface Mount Technology) and PTH (Pin-Through-Hole) Senior Failure Analysis Engineer is a specialized professional responsible for identifying why electronic assemblies fail during manufacturing or in the field. They act as "technological detectives," using advanced diagnostic tools to pinpoint root causes and recommend corrective actions to improve product reliability.
The ideal candidate will have experience with SMT, High Density Manufacturing, Pick and Place, Reflow, Downstream Process, Soldering, or PCB Assembly.
Core Responsibilities- Root Cause Investigation:
Conduct detailed physical and electrical analysis of failed PCBAs (Printed Circuit Board Assemblies) to determine failure mechanisms. - SMT/PTH Troubleshooting:
Identify defects specific to assembly processes, such as solder joint issues (voiding, head-in-pillow), component misalignment, or thermal damage. - Develop Repair/Rework Processes:
Create repair/rework solutions for PCBA assemblies. - Documentation & Reporting:
Prepare comprehensive technical reports detailing failure modes, methodologies, and evidence for stakeholders and customers. - Cross-Functional Collaboration:
Partner with design, manufacturing, and quality teams to implement corrective and preventive actions (CAPA). - Continuous Improvement:
Utilize statistical tools like FMEA (Failure Mode and Effects Analysis) and SPC (Statistical Process Control) to identify failure trends.
- Duties of this position are performed in a normal office environment.
- Duties may require extended periods of sitting and sustained visual concentration on a computer monitor or on numbers and other detailed data.
- Repetitive manual movements (e.g., data entry, using a computer mouse, using a calculator, etc.) are frequently required.
- Occasional travel may be required.
- 4 to 6 years in a similar role or industry.
Bachelor degree or consideration of an equivalent combination of education and experience.
