The Product Safety Engineer provides high‑quality certification services to the HVAC market, focusing on energy efficiency. The role involves interpreting HVAC/EEV standards, making technical decisions, and ensuring compliant products are available in the public marketplace.
PrincipalDuties & Responsibilities
- Independently manage multiple certification projects, ensuring compliance with safety requirements and completing them within allotted time frames.
- Evaluate products against national and international standards and precedent decisions.
- Manage project costs within the agreed budget and maintain productivity in line with company expectations.
- Review others’ work and perform testing and witness testing when necessary.
- Review test set‑up, data, and reports, authorizing the application of the CSA Mark.
- Prepare and sign Certification Reports and Certificates of Compliance.
- Provide client assistance in solving problems or failures without divulging proprietary information.
- Keep management informed of project status, highlighting major problems and non‑compliance issues.
- Evaluate and qualify companies in the administration of certification programs.
- Review customer test methods, systems, and product designs, ensuring all documentation meets required standards.
- Ensure all test equipment and quality procedures comply with guidelines.
- Provide technical briefings on new and existing requirements.
- Authorize application and removal of the CSA Mark.
- Provide technical information service to external and internal customers, including those forwarded by the Client Service Center.
- Liaise with customers at the design stage to meet national/international standards without compromising confidentiality.
- Support current clients and identify new opportunities in collaboration with sales to drive growth.
- Classify products by use, environment, and function; determine applicable requirements, test standards, and sample requirements for customers.
- Explain available product certification programs and production‑control requirements to clients.
- Prepare Test Lab Work Orders and Special Testing Documentation, detailing relevant sections of standards, test sample plans, data‑collection methods, Job Hazard Analysis, and instructions.
- Demonstrate testing within CSA laboratories and make field trips to witness test work at manufacturer facilities as required.
- Maintain knowledge of clauses, tests, and applications across multiple product types.
- Compile evaluation records, data, and summary test results into forms, templates, and checklists independently.
- Interpret test results correctly with minimal guidance.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology with 3‑10 years of job‑related experience.
- Broad knowledge of CSA and UL Standards in the HVAC/Energy Efficiency area.
- Strong experience with AHRI, DOE, Energy Star, CEC, NRCan standards for residential and commercial HVAC equipment.
- Knowledge of a variety of testing procedures.
- Excellent communication skills, able to explain findings and technical decisions to customers and engineers.
- Test engineering experience and familiarity with CSA programs and services.
- Technical document interpretation and detail orientation.
- Self‑starter with strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Customer‑service oriented, critical thinker with exceptional problem‑solving ability.
- Strong organizational, time‑management, and project‑management skills.
- Ability to work unsupervised in both individual and team environments.
- Technical report writing and computer proficiency (Microsoft Office).
- Familiarity with various lab equipment, instruments, and tools.
