SCOPE:The Principal Electrical Engineer, Genset, serves as the U.S. electrical engineering lead for gas engine-based power generation systems (Genset) supporting data center and distributed energy applications. The role will lead the end-to-end electrical design, including generator systems, controls, protection, and cross-system interfaces from requirements through commissioning. This position leads the technical engineering activities related to UL certification and compliance, ensuring electrical design alignment with U.S. safety standards and regulatory requirements.
This position also designs gas engine generator sets to meet customer requirements for grid interconnection, including PCC coordination, non-export control, and stable parallel operation of multiple units. This position collaborates with global stakeholders across Japan and the U.S. to align priorities, enable effective execution, and support MHIA’s long-term business objectives.
twelve (12) years of electrical engineering experience in industrial power systems, including at least six (6) years of experience with generator sets or genset-based power generation systems.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:Lead Electrical Engineering for Gas Engine Sets
- Lead electrical engineering from requirement definition through quotation and detailed design for gas engine sets
- Define electrical system architecture including generator, switch gear, protection, control panels, and auxiliary systems
- Manage subsystem interfaces (engine, generator, controller, PMS, BESS) and ensure system integration and design consistency
- Support FAT, commissioning (SAT), and troubleshooting including root cause analysis
- Contribute to standardization of electrical design and modular configurations
- Lead UL certification activities including coordination with NRTLs and certification strategy execution
- Translate UL, NEC, and NFPA requirements into engineering specifications and design requirements
- Prepare certification documentation and resolve technical issues to ensure compliance across design and testing phases
- Integrate compliance and verification requirements into design deliverables and FAT/SAT processes
- Interface with AHJs and support permitting activities
- Develop and validate parallel operation strategies for multiple gas engine generator sets, including load sharing, stability, and operational control.
- Lead grid interconnection design at PCC, including synchronization and protection coordination
- Define non-export/export control strategies and plant-level PMS integration with BESS and SCADA systems
- Ensure compliance with IEEE 1547 and utility interconnection requirements, including coordination with utilities and consultants
- Specify and validate protection schemes (relays, anti-islanding, breaker coordination)
- Support system performance validation under grid disturbances and commissioning activities
