Position: Permit Technician I

As a member of the Building Inspections Department, this role is Permit Technician I. You will serve as the initial point of contact for customers and help maintain the accuracy and integrity of the City’s building permitting process. Permit Technicians rotate responsibilities to support daily operations, including managing departmental phone inquiries, reviewing permit documentation submitted via email, providing feedback or corrections as needed, forwarding complete submittals to the next stage of plan review, and delivering counter service to walk-in customers.

Job Details

The City of Plano is seeking dependable and detail-oriented individuals to join the Building Inspections Department as Permit Technician I. In this role, you will serve as the initial point of contact for customers and help maintain the accuracy and integrity of the City’s building permitting process.

Responsibilities
  • Assist contractors and citizens with requests for information regarding department procedures and City ordinances; provide assistance with public information requests.
  • Process basic permit applications; issue permits and collect fees; print completed permits and notify customers of permit status; enter data into the computer system.
  • Assist with administrative duties including, but not limited to, data entry, filing, answering the telephone, and cash reconciliation.
  • Determine appropriate fees for permits and contractor registration.
  • Receive telephone requests, research requests and inquiries, and assist with resolving inquiries.
  • Provide administrative support to the work unit.
  • Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work schedule is essential.
Qualifications
  • Knowledge
    :
    City building codes and ordinances; methods and procedures used in the collection and reporting of cash assets; data entry policies and procedures; record formats; how to organize data using appropriate software; office procedures and policies.
  • Skill
    :
    Communicating clearly both verbally and in writing; completing arithmetic calculations using basic mathematical formulas.
  • Education
    :
    High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Experience
    :
    One (1) year of customer services experience preferred.
  • Any work-related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above Minimum Qualifications is an acceptable substitute for the above specified education and experience requirements.

    :

Compensation

The target hourly rate for this position is $19.75 - $21.58, depending on qualifications.

Distinguishing Characteristics

This is the entry-level classification in the Permit Technician series. The incumbent follows routine procedures and guidelines in the application of prescribed duties and works under close supervision with work frequently reviewed by a superior. This classification is distinguished from the Permit Technician II in that the latter performs more complex technical duties requiring a higher level of knowledge and skill.
