Surgical Tech First Assistant CVOR

*$10,000 sign on bonus (Based on eligibility)*

Location: The Heart Hospital - Plano (Flexibility to float between all THH campuses, including THH Dallas, Plano, Denton, and Frisco)

Shift: Full-time, days, two 12-hr shifts (6:30 AM-7:00 PM) and two 8-hr shifts (6:30 AM-3:00 PM). 40 hours per week. Must be willing and able to participate in the call rotation and respond within established response times.

• Minimum of 2 years of recent clinical experience as a CVOR CSFA.
• Proficiency in Endoscopic Vein Harvest (EVH) and first assisting on adult cardiac surgery cases, including CABG, valve, aortic, and other complex open‑heart procedures.
• Experience with cardiac and vascular tissue exposure, retraction, hemostasis, cannulation assistance, and closure techniques.
• Assisting with sternal opening and closure.
• Ability to independently scrub cardiac, thoracis, vascular and endovascular cases as needed.
• Experience assisting in minimally invasive and robotic cardiac procedures.
• Experience with endovascular and vascular surgery cases.

The Surgical Tech First Assistant works as a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) and a First Assistant. This position helps surgeons and surgical teams during major and complex procedures, working under a Registered Nurse and a Surgeon.

• Ensures supplies, equipment, and instruments are available and working for each procedure. Updates surgeon preference cards for equipment, radiology, supplies, and notes. Pulls, opens, and sets up cases and coordinates with surgeons on equipment and supply needs before procedures. Assists in building specialty instrument trays.
• Prepares the operating room according to surgical procedure schedules, arranging sterile setups of instrument table supplies and equipment for specific procedures, wrapping instruments for gas or steam sterilization, performing quality control procedures on equipment and reporting any issues, and ensuring the OR is clean before and after surgery.
• Scrubs for cases in major surgical services following established procedures and standards, requiring advanced knowledge of anatomy and surgical instruments, and knowledge of surgeons’ preferences and other technical knowledge.
• Educates and prepares surgical teams according to procedure.
• Assists with or performs the positioning, prepping and draping of the patient.
• Assists the surgeon during procedures by passing sterile supplies and equipment, holding retractor devices, responding to the surgical team’s needs, tying off vessels and tissues, repairing incisions, cutting and cauterizing tissues, stabilizing drains, and applying wound dressings as needed. Performs complex surgical techniques as directed by the physician and Texas scope of practice, receives surgical specimens following protocol, and notifies the circulating nurse and delivers specimens to the appropriate location.
• Contacts the pharmacy for prescription medication with a Registered Nurse or circulating nurse partnership.
• Coordinates and works with system vetting vendors for the surgeon and department, researches and obtains quotes for capital purchases, new equipment, and supplies with specialty coordinators, and places orders.
• Stays updated on surgical equipment, trends, and techniques by attending in‑service or internal education programs, serving as a resource and preceptor for those learning the scrub role, and helps the department through in‑services, precepting, and mentoring staff.

• Education:
  
  Graduate of an accredited program.
• Experience:
  
  Minimum 2 years of experience.
• Certification / License / Registration:
  Basic Life Support (BLS) within 30 days of hire or transfer;
  Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) or Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA) from NBSTA or NCCT required.
