The Surgical Technologist supports the surgical team during the intraoperative phase of patient care under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse. The role is responsible for preparing the operating room, maintaining the sterile field, providing surgical instruments and supplies, and assisting the surgical team throughout procedures.
Responsibilities- Prepare the operating room and sterile field according to the scheduled procedure.
- Review surgical requirements and ensure all necessary instruments, equipment, and supplies are available and functioning properly.
- Prepare and maintain surgical instrument tables in an organized manner.
- Perform surgical counts of sponges, sharps, instruments, and other items according to established procedures.
- Anticipate the needs of the surgeon and surgical team throughout procedures.
- Pass sterile instruments, supplies, and equipment during surgery.
- Assist with patient positioning and surgical draping.
- Assist with preparation of the operative site as directed.
- Handle and transfer surgical specimens according to established protocols.
- Assist with placement of surgical dressings following procedures.
- Disassemble, clean, and prepare surgical instruments for decontamination and sterilization.
- Maintain a clean and safe operating room environment.
- Follow infection prevention, sterile technique, AORN, OSHA, and other applicable safety standards.
- Ensure proper handling and disposal of sharps, fluids, and medical waste.
- Maintain knowledge of surgical equipment and instrumentation prior to patient use.
- Minimum 2 years of CVOR-specific Surgical Technologist experience.
- Experience with:
- Open Heart
- Vascular
- Endovascular
- Thoracic procedures
- CST certification required; grandfathered candidates may be considered.
- BLS certification from the American Heart Association (AHA) required.
- Graduate of an accredited or nationally recognized Surgical Technology program, or equivalent qualifying military/health service training.
- Strong knowledge of surgical procedures, anatomy, instrumentation, and sterile technique.
- Knowledge of infection prevention and sterilization standards.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced surgical environment.
