This is a position of opportunity. The position may be filled by a candidate with significant educational administrative experience, paralegal experience, or experience as an attorney/lawyer or similar.
Primary Purpose:
Provide district-level leadership and judgment for complex, high-impact situations involving legal processes, compliance, and community concerns. .
Qualifications
Education/Certification:
- Master's degree in Educational Leadership, Public Administration, Law, or a related field preferred
- Juris Doctor (JD) or Paralegal Certificate preferred
- Strong working knowledge of education law concepts, including grievances, FERPA, subpoenas, custody/protective orders, open records, and agency complaints
- Ability to interpret legal guidance and collaborate effectively with legal counsel
- Demonstrated professional judgment and discretion in sensitive, high-risk matters
- Ability to translate legal and regulatory requirements into clear, actionable guidance for campuses
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with administrators, attorneys, families, and community members
- Understanding of campus operations, district governance, and board policy
- Experience in responding to grievances and maintaining legal compliance for an organization
- Proven history of success with high-impact decision-making
- Legal and policy experience
- Serve as the district's primary campus- and community-facing administrator for legal processes, grievances, and compliance
- Provide guidance to principals and campus administrators on legal and procedural matters, including grievances, FERPA, subpoenas, custody and protective orders, and agency requests
- Support campus and district administrators during grievance, disciplinary, or legal matters involving attorneys, including preparation, documentation, and follow-up
- Review and interpret student-related legal documents (e.g., custody orders, protective orders, CPS/foster care records, name or gender changes, McKinney-Vento documentation) and guide campuses on implementation and communication
- Oversee the district's grievance process to ensure consistency, procedural integrity, and timely resolution
- Support complex or escalated grievance matters involving parents, community members, district leadership, or legal counsel
- Serve as the primary liaison with district legal counsel, coordinating attorney involvement for high-risk or complex matters
- Coordinate responses to subpoenas, agency requests, and complaints from local, state, and federal entities
- Provide administrative oversight of public information requests (Open Records) to ensure compliance with applicable law and board policy
- Supervise the Grievance & Compliance Officer and the Public Information Officer (Open Records), with operational processing housed in those roles
- Develop training, tools, and resources to support administrators' capacity to manage grievances, documentation, and compliance responsibilities
- Translate legal guidance, board policy, and district expectations into clear, practical systems and campus-level practices
- Monitor trends across grievances, complaints, and legal matters and advise district leadership on legal, procedural, and reputational risk
- Prepare and manage the department budget; process legal invoices, settlements, contracts, and MOUs
- Draft correspondence, reports, and administrative communications related to legal and compliance matters
- Direct and monitor the work of the Public Information Officer and Grievance and Compliance Officer.
- General office equipment such as computer and printer.
Mental Demands:
- This position requires a high level of mental acuity and judgment to analyze complex legal issues, interpret policies, and apply statutes and regulations accurately. The work demands critical thinking, problem-solving, and the ability to make sound decisions under pressure. The administrator must manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment, maintain confidentiality, exercise discretion, and communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders on sensitive matters.
