STAFF CLASSIFICATION
- Full-time Support Staff
- Exempt
The Director of Communications is responsible for developing and overseeing communication strategies that amplify the mission and ministry of First United Methodist Church Plano. This includes directing all internal and external communication efforts to engage the congregation, promoting events, and maintaining a cohesive brand identity across all platforms.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIESGeneral Communication
- Upholds and manages FUMC Plano’s brand standards across all channels.
- Oversees the creation and delivery of all church communications, ensuring timeliness, accuracy, and high-quality presentation.
- Manages and updates the church website to reflect up-to-date information, ministry initiatives, and events, coordinating with the Media Director for high-quality visuals and videos.
- Develops and manages the annual communications budget.
- Performs other duties as directed by the Lead Pastor.
Internal Communication
- Oversees the use of Realm for internal communications, including event registrations, death announcements, and weekly happenings.
- Creates and distributes the weekly e-newsletter, collaborating with the Media Director for video and visual content.
- Coordinates with staff and volunteers to develop, organize, and publicize events through e-newsletters, website, Realm, social media, and other internal communication channels.
- Assists staff and volunteers with graphic design ensuring, all materials align with FUMC Plano’s brand standards.
- Edits materials created by other departments to ensure grammatical accuracy, adherence to AP style, and consistency with FUMC Plano’s brand.
- Develops presentation slides for worship services, special events, and seasonal programming, working closely with the Media Director for cohesive visuals.
- Collaborates with the Media Director to create videos highlighting the church’s mission
External Communication
- Works with and supports the Media Director in developing and implementing a comprehensive external communication strategy, including social media, digital advertising, website content, and outdoor digital signage.
- Works with the Media Director to produce high-quality videos and visuals to enhance the church’s digital presence in the community.
- Coordinates publicity efforts for major church events, using both traditional and digital media to reach a wide audience.
- Oversees the production and placement of outdoor signage and other promotional materials to increase visibility in the community.

- Excellent writing and proofreading skills with a strong knowledge of AP style.
- Graphic design skills using Adobe Creative Suite and Canva; working knowledge of AI image- generating software a plus.
- Manages and updates the church website using Squarespace.
- Working knowledge of Realm, and social networking platforms Facebook and Instagram.
- Working knowledge of PowerPoint.
- Outstanding organizational skills.
- Strong work ethic.
- High energy and able to carry out multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Outstanding team player.
- Demonstrates initiative.
- Exhibits a strong spirit of support.
- Outstanding people skills with the ability to deal in an appropriate and caring manner with all who bring requests to the communication ministry.
- Able to recruit, empower, and work with laity to carry out the ministry of communication.
- Oversees crisis communications protocol.
- Bachelor’s degree in Communications, marketing, public relations, or a related field.
- Minimum three-five years’ experience in Communications.
- Experience working on a church staff or non-profit preferred.
The Lead Pastor supervises the Director of Communications.
