The successful candidate may be offered a position in either the Sustainability Coordinator or the Senior Sustainability Coordinator classification. Salary range for the Sustainability Coordinator is $57,816 - $86,725 annually; for the Senior Sustainability Coordinator $63,742 – $95,614 annually.

Join the City of Plano’s award‑winning sustainability division as a sustainability coordinator or senior sustainability coordinator, depending on qualifications, and be part of a high‑impact team of passionate sustainability leaders. This position focuses on energy conservation, clean air practices, grant application and management and innovative project implementation. Likewise, it entails close collaboration with the team for excellence in program development and delivery as well as active engagement of a variety of audiences to promote sustainable practices at home, school, work and beyond.

Summary of Duties

The Environmental Education & Community Outreach Coordinator is responsible for presentations, programs and activities for schools, community and civic groups and businesses.

Concentration Areas
  • Garden & Landscaping – Responsible for landscaping and maintenance of the Environmental Education Center (EEC), Nature Explore Classroom and Discovery Trail; oversees operations of the Plano Community Garden (PCG) and liaises with gardeners and division staff; schedules volunteer projects.
  • Litter Awareness – Coordinates solid waste management, litter prevention, illegal dumping and beautification programming.
  • Waste Reduction – Co‑ordinates recycling, waste reduction, household chemical reuse, electronic waste and solid waste management programming to increase residential recycling rate.
  • Sustainability – Designs and implements a range of sustainability projects.
  • Outreach & Engagement – Produces articles, social media content, design work, award applications and outreach materials for SEED division programs; assists in promotion and new engagement opportunities.
  • Water Quality & Conservation – Develops, administers and evaluates water education programming aligned with the City’s Water Management Plan, Drought & Emergency Response Plan, Stormwater Permit and Fats, Oils and Grease Program.
Examples of Essential Job Functions
  • Develops and organizes educational programs and activities for volunteers, community and the City.
  • Researches new and evaluates existing programs for effectiveness and efficiency; assists in policy recommendations for resource management and conservation.
  • Writes and creates presentations, press action requests, newsletter articles, brochures, flyers and other public awareness materials for sustainability volunteer programs; develops and facilitates marketing strategies.
  • Designs and schedules social media posts to promote department programs and sustainability information; updates outreach websites.
  • Participates in local, regional, and national organizations focused on environmental education, volunteerism and community outreach goals and objectives.
  • Plans and implements special events for the community.
  • Develops and delivers presentations, lessons and workshops to varied community audiences including youth and adults.
  • Helps maintain the upkeep of the Nature Explore Classroom and Environmental Education Center.
  • Keeps current with new developments in environmental awareness and resource conservation; incorporates new developments into appropriate programs.
