Job Details

Public Works Crew Leader – Signal Department. As a Crew Leader, you will maintain the City’s signal lights and signal equipment, oversee daily work orders through asset management, provide customer communication, and supervise maintenance staff. Overtime may be available.

Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent;
  • Minimum three (3) years of experience installing, repairing, and maintaining signal equipment;
  • Class C driver’s license (Class A preferred for certain duties);
  • IMSA Traffic Signal Technician I preferred;
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills;
  • Proficiency in safety practices, hand and power tools, traffic control, and barricade placement;
  • Ability to use basic functions of an iPad;
  • Physical ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 75 pounds and work in confined spaces, near machinery, and adverse environmental conditions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead scheduled maintenance and repair of signal lights and associated equipment;
  • Complete daily work orders using asset management software;
  • Communicate work status to customers and supervisors;
  • Ensure safety compliance on all work sites and enforce proper PPE use;
  • Operate backhoes, tandem dump trucks, street sweepers, loaders, and other field equipment;
  • Inspect vehicles, equipment and tools for safety and readiness;
  • Address and resolve citizen complaints with professionalism and clear communication;
  • Train subordinate personnel, including equipment operators and maintenance workers;
  • Handle location requests to protect infrastructure during third‑party construction;
  • Assess citizen requests for repair prioritization of pavements, sidewalks, alleys, signs, drainage, signals, and markings;
  • Perform tree trimming or removal to maintain right‑of‑way visibility;
  • Maintain consistent attendance on assigned work schedule;
  • Evaluate, replace, and repair traffic control devices and signalized intersection equipment.
Additional Duties
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Decisions and Leadership

The incumbent determines materials needed for projects, assigns on‑site field staff, and chooses appropriate methods to complete assignments.

Minimum Qualifications – Knowledge & Skills

Knowledge of safety practices and equipment usage, public works infrastructure, and traffic control. Skill in clear communication, map and schematic interpretation, leadership, basic math, and customer service.

Education & Experience

High school diploma or GED; three (3) years experience in installation, maintenance, and repair of infrastructure including pavements, sidewalks, and signals. Lead experience preferred. Any work‑related experience replacing the specified education or experience may be acceptable.

Licenses & Certifications

Texas Class A Commercial driver’s license (required);
Class C (preferred). IMSA Certification Level I and II preferred.

Conditions of Employment

Must pass a drug test, driver’s license check, criminal history background check, periodic CJIS background check (for positions accessing police buildings), and social security number verification.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

Work on and around city buildings, streets, and facilities. Operate motor vehicles and handle varied hand and power tools. Adequate vision, hearing, and speech are required. Tasks include lifting, carrying, and moving up to 75 pounds. Exposure to loud noise, dust, temperature extremes, road hazards, vibration, and hazardous substances is common. Work may involve extended shifts, holidays, or weekends.
