Job DetailsThe City of Plano is seeking innovative, forward-thinking individuals to join our team as a Public Works Maintenance Worker I, II, or III in the Signal Department. As a Maintenance Worker, you will assist your Crew Leader with daily traffic signal maintenance throughout the City of Plano and help ensure safe, efficient travel for our community.
This hands‑on role offers the opportunity to work outdoors, learn valuable technical and electrical skills, and contribute to highly visible infrastructure that impacts residents every day. You will support signal and street light maintenance using basic hand tools, assist with pulling and installing signal cable, help with wiring connections in signal poles and streetlights under supervision with voltages up to 480 V, operate bucket equipment, and assist with field data collection and daily work records.
Shift schedule:
Four 10‑hour shifts, either Monday–Thursday 6:30 am to 5:00 pm or Tuesday–Friday 6:30 am to 5:00 pm, depending on crew assignment.
- $175 annual boot allowance and $175 annual jean allowance

- Assist in preparing work areas and securing job sites with traffic control devices.
- Prepare tools, materials, and equipment; clean, inspect, and maintain tools and trucks.
- Comply with all written city policies and procedures.
- Use basic personal protective equipment.
- Drive to and from assigned work locations.
- Maintain consistent attendance.
- Utilize hand tools (shovels, screwdriver, wire strippers, crimpers).
- Pull all sizes of signal cable under supervision.
- Assist with installing wiring connections in signal poles and streetlights (tolerable up to 480 V).
- Assist with data collection of assets in the field and maintaining daily work records.
- Operate bucket controls from ground and in bucket.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

- Able to assemble, hang, wire, and disassemble signal heads, lighted street signs, video detection cameras.
- Proficient in installing school flashers, solar panels, and testing batteries.
- Install wire connections with voltages up to 480 V without direct supervision.
- Drive bucket truck to and from locations as necessary.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

- Skill in communicating clearly verbal and written; operating light equipment; routine construction and repair; basic math and measurements.
- Education:
High school diploma or GED equivalent. - Experience:
One year previous maintenance or construction experience preferred (two years required for II and III; three years preferred for III). - Licenses:
Valid Texas Class "C" driver’s license; optional IMSA Work Zone TK or IMSA Electronics certifications.
Employees must possess mobility to work in and around city buildings; operate a motor vehicle; strong stamina; vision to read printed materials; hearing and speech; dexterity; ability to lift up to 75 lb. Exposure to hot/cold temperatures, noise, chemical, electrical hazards, and possible stand‑by duty.
Conditions of EmploymentMust pass a drug test, driver license check, criminal history background check, periodic CJIS background check (for positions requiring access into Police buildings) and social security number verification check.
