Location: Streets, Highways, Bridges

Employment Type: Full‑time, Regular

Job Details: The successful candidate may be offered a position in either the Public Works Maintenance Worker I, II or III classification. Hourly rates: I $18.81, II $19.75, III $20.74.

Public Works Maintenance Worker I

Summary of Duties: Performs light to heavy manual labor to repair and maintain City infrastructure within streets, alleys, easements, and rights‑of‑way under close supervision.

Distinguishing Characteristics: Entry‑level classification; follows routine procedures and guidelines with close supervision.

General Job Functions
  • Assist in preparing work areas and securing job sites by setting up traffic control devices.
  • Prepare tools, materials, and equipment; clean, inspect, and maintain tools, equipment, and trucks.
  • Comply with all written city policies and procedures.
  • Understand and use basic personal protective equipment.
  • Drive to and from work locations as assigned.
  • Repair and maintain City infrastructure (streets, alleys, sidewalks, curbs, storm drains) and perform miscellaneous repairs as required.
  • Operate various equipment including vibratory compactor, mud jack machine, crack sealer, jackhammer, mortar mixer, weed‑eaters, chainsaw, grinder, shovel, and related power and hand tools.
  • Assist in debris removal from rights‑of‑way and drainage ways.
  • Perform temporary street repairs such as pothole repair.
  • Assist with setting up forms for curb pours, sidewalks, and street repairs.
  • Maintain regular and consistent attendance.
Marginal Duties
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Knowledge of safety practices, hand and power tools, tool maintenance, traffic control, and barricade placement.
  • Skill in clear verbal and written communication; operating light equipment; routine construction and repair; basic math calculations and measurements.
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent preferred.
  • One year of previous maintenance or construction experience preferred.
  • Valid Texas Class “C” driver’s license required upon employment.
  • Must pass drug test, driver license check, criminal history background check, periodic CJIS background check, and social security verification.
  • Physical abilities: lift, carry, push, and pull up to 75 lbs; mobility to work in confined spaces and on roads; vision, hearing, and speech for communication.
Public Works Maintenance Worker II

Summary of Duties: Performs light to heavy manual labor to repair and maintain City infrastructure, including water and sewer lines, with regular supervision.

Distinguishing Characteristics: Mid‑level classification; follows routine procedures under close supervision.

General Job Functions
  • All functions from Public Works Maintenance Worker I.
  • Operate equipment such as tandem dump truck, roller, forklift, centrifugal trash pumps.
  • Operate dump truck for assignments as required.
  • Setup forms for curb pours, sidewalks, and street repairs with minimal supervision.
  • Monitor equipment operator to prevent damage to utility lines during digging.
Minimum Qualifications
  • One year of previous maintenance or construction experience required; two years preferred.
  • Must have a valid Texas Class “A” CDL driver’s license and Work Zone Safety Certification.
