Who we're looking for
At TFS, we're building next-generation products that redefine mobility for millions of customers worldwide. We're looking for a Software Engineering Manager - Backend with deep full-stack and backend expertise to lead a high-performing team delivering scalable, resilient systems on AWS.
This role is for someone who thinks in systems - someone who can design serverless architectures, drive API strategy, mentor engineers to do their best work, and partner closely with Product and Front-End Engineering to deliver reliable platforms that power customer-facing experiences. You'll own the backend and platform engineering strategy for your domain, driving technical decisions while keeping your team moving fast and building with quality.
This position is based in Plano, TX. The selected candidate will be expected to reside within a commutable distance of this location.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead, grow, and retain a team of full-stack and backend engineers - hiring top talent, running performance reviews, coaching, and creating clear paths for career development
- Own the backend architecture and technical direction for your domain, ensuring scalability, reliability, and maintainability across all services
- Drive engineering excellence through code quality standards, API design conventions, testing practices, and continuous improvement
- Partner with Product, Design, and Front-End Engineering to define and deliver features from concept to production
- Champion system reliability, observability, and security as first-class engineering concerns
- Establish and enforce best practices around API design, data modeling, event-driven patterns, and serverless architecture on AWS
- Collaborate with platform, infrastructure, and security teams to optimize CI/CD pipelines, deployment strategies, and cloud cost management
- Communicate clearly with stakeholders at all levels - translating technical complexity into business impact
- Balance strategic thinking with hands-on involvement - you're comfortable reviewing PRs, unblocking engineers, and diving into hard problems when needed
- Monitor and improve key system metrics: latency, error rates, availability, and cost efficiency
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent practical experience
- 10+ years of software engineering experience with a strong backend or full-stack focus, including 3+ years in an engineering management or tech lead role
- Deep expertise in designing and building serverless architectures on AWS
, including:- Lambda for compute
- API Gateway (REST and HTTP APIs) for service exposure
- DynamoDB or Aurora Serverless for data persistence
- Step Functions or other workflow orchestration tools
- Event Bridge
, SQS
, or SNS for event-driven and async communication - S3 for object storage and data lake patterns
- Cloud Front for API acceleration and edge caching
- Strong proficiency in Type Script and/or Python for backend services - you can write or review production-quality code and hold your team to the same standard
- Proven ability to design RESTful and Graph
QL APIs
, with a strong grasp of API contract design, versioning, error handling, and type-safe tooling (e.g., OpenAPI, Graph
QL Code Generator, tRPC) - Solid understanding of Infrastructure as Code using AWS CDK
, Cloud Formation, or Terraform - Experience with observability and monitoring tooling:
Cloud Watch, X-Ray, Datadog, or similar - you know how to instrument services and respond to incidents - Strong understanding of security best practices
: IAM policies, least-privilege access, secrets management (Secrets Manager, SSM Parameter Store), and data encryption at rest and in transit - Experience with testing practices: unit testing, integration testing, contract testing, and load testing for distributed systems
- Familiarity with containerized workloads (ECS Fargate, Docker) for services that don't fit the serverless model
- Excellent communication skills - you can articulate technical tradeoffs clearly to both engineers and non-technical stakeholders
