Job Details

Plano Parks and Recreation is looking for Water Safety Instructors (II). Below is a listing of the primary job responsibilities:

* Supervises, arranges, and grades swim classes.

* Communicates professionally with patrons and staff.

* Monitors and instructs swimming lessons.

* Maintains class attendance and course records.

* Ensures the safety of class participants by enforcing rules, regulations, and policies.

What we are looking for

Our Water Safety Instructor II's are critical to the success of our Learn-to-Swim programs. They help create an environment where family and friends feel safe, where they feel welcome, and where they feel they belong. Qualities we are looking for include passion, professionalism, excitement and positive energy. Key components also include maintaining safety at all times, the ability to evaluate swimming skills of registrants and effectively grade each student to the objectives of the American Red Cross course material.

Summary of Duties:
Under general supervision, the Water Safety Instructor II is responsible for supervising and instructing swimming lessons in accordance with City and department policies.

Distinguishing Characteristics:
This is the journey-level classification in the Water Safety Instructor series that follows diversified procedures and implements processes to accomplish end results, within guidelines. Immediate supervision is available upon request.

Examples of ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

* Supervises, arranges, and grades swim classes.

* Communicates professionally with patrons and staff.

* Monitors and instructs swimming lessons.

* Maintains class attendance and course records.

* Promotes public relations with facility users and outside organizations by presenting water safety seminars to requesting groups.

* Performs general housekeeping practices in the aquatic facility.

* Ensures the safety of class participants by enforcing rules, regulations, and policies.

* Completes duties for coordinator when needed.

* Assists with office paperwork.

* Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work schedule is essential.

Marginal Duties:

* Performs other duties as assigned.

Typical Decisions:
The incumbent must effectively interpret and implement the Red Cross curriculum and guidelines to match those of the department. The incumbent must be able to determine the appropriate skill level for the participants and be able to exercise good judgment to ensure a safe environment for participants.

Minimum Qualifications:

Knowledge of:
Current swimming techniques; CPR and first aid; water safety policies, rules, and practices; teaching methods and techniques.

Skill in:
Communicating effectively both verbally and in writing; demonstrating all swimming strokes; interacting tactfully and effectively with the public; administering first aid and CPR; demonstrating water safety skills.

Education:

High school diploma or GED equivalent.

Experience:

Two (2) years of experience as a Water Safety Instructor.

Any work related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above

Minimum Qualifications is an acceptable substitute for the above specified education and experience requirements

Licenses and

Certifications:

American Red Cross issued:
First Aid, CPR, Automated External Defibrillator, Water Safety Instructor, and Lifeguard certifications required at the time of appointment.

Conditions of Employment:
Must pass a drug test, driver license check, criminal history background check, periodic CJIS background check (for positions requiring access into Police buildings) and social security number verification check.

Physical Demands and

Working Conditions:

Must possess mobility to work in and around City pools and facilities; strength, stamina, and mobility to perform light to medium physical work; to demonstrate swimming and safety techniques; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone or radio. The job involves frequent walking to identify problems or hazards. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator.
