Responsibilities
  • Ensures the personal safety of facility users by enforcing all rules and regulations.
  • Regulates and monitors water chemistry in the pool.
  • Conducts weekly in‑service training, evaluates and gives instruction to lifeguards to improve techniques, and performs CPR audits.
  • Supervises and gives direction to the lifeguarding staff to accomplish daily goals and objectives.
  • Performs maintenance work to pool, spectator areas and rest rooms.
  • Collects fees; prepares bank deposits and departmental records and reports.
  • Promotes public relations with facility users and outside organizations by presenting water safety seminars to requesting groups.
  • Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work schedule is essential.

Typical Decisions

The incumbent must be able to determine and enforce safety measures in and around the pool, supervise the activities of subordinates, and give direction to achieve departmental objectives.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of: Plano Parks & Recreation Department and the aquatics area; aquatics activities; lifeguard and rescue techniques and practices; CPR and first aid; water safety practices, procedures, and regulations.

Skill in: Communicating effectively both verbally and in writing; demonstrating strong swimming abilities; performing CPR; administering first aid; completing water rescue procedures.

Education: Must be at least 17 years of age.

Experience: Three (3) summers experience as a lifeguard. Any work related experience that demonstrates acceptable proficiency levels in the above Minimum Qualifications is an acceptable substitute for the specified education and experience requirements.

Licenses and Certifications
  • Certified Pool Operator
  • Red Cross CPR and First Aid certification
  • Lifeguard Training Instructor
  • American Red Cross issued Waterpark Lifeguard certification
Conditions of Employment

Must pass a drug test, criminal history background check, periodic CJIS background check (for positions requiring access to Police buildings) and social security number verification check.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

Must possess mobility to work in and around City pools and facilities; strength, stamina, and mobility to perform light to medium physical work; ability to perform swimming and diving rescue techniques; hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone or radio. The job involves frequent walking to identify problems or hazards. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator.

Positions in this classification bend, stoop, kneel, twist and reach when performing rescue and first aid activities. Employees must be able to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 100 pounds, or heavier weights with the use of proper equipment. Employees work in and around City pools and facilities and are exposed to loud noise levels, heights, hot temperatures, chemical hazards, and hazardous physical substances and fumes.
