The Junior Estimator supports the estimating team by assisting with quantity takeoffs, cost analysis, and bid preparation for road striping and pavement marking projects. This entry-level role is ideal for candidates looking to build estimating experience in a specialty contracting environment, with exposure to DOT, municipal, and commercial roadway projects. The position focuses on learning estimating systems, understanding production rates, and developing accurate, competitive bids under the guidance of senior staff.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist with quantity takeoffs for pavement striping, symbols, legends, and specialty markings from plans and specifications
- Measure linear feet, square footage, and unit counts using digital takeoff software or scaled plans
- Review bid documents, including plans, specifications, and addenda
- Assist in preparing cost estimates for materials, labor, equipment, traffic control, mobilization, and subcontractors
- Compile bid spreadsheets and supporting documentation
- Assist with bid forms, pricing breakdowns, and submission packages
- Track bid deadlines and help ensure timely submissions
- Maintain organized bid files, estimate records, bid logs, and tracking spreadsheets
- Assist in updating unit costs and production rates
- Compare estimated costs against historical project data
- Participate in post-bid reviews and job cost comparisons
- Coordinate with operations and project management to understand field productivity
- Communicate with material suppliers and subcontractors as directed
- Ask questions and seek clarification on scope, quantities, and assumptions
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED
- Basic understanding of construction drawings and specifications (or willingness to learn)
- Strong math skills and attention to detail
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel (required) and able to learn digital takeoff
- Good organization and time-management skills
- Detail-oriented and methodical approach to work
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work under deadlines in a bid-driven environment
- Willingness to learn field operations and production methods
- Professional, dependable, and team-oriented
