Recreation League Baseball Umpire

Recreation $12.00 - $16/hour

Reports to:

Supervisor Part-time

Supervises:
None Non-Exempt/Non Benefitted

General Purpose

League Umpire serves under the direction of and general supervision of the Sports Program Coordinators and the Recreation Manager. The programs begin in April and run through the first part of July. Games will be played Monday - Thursday evenings. The umpire must have general umpiring/scorekeeping knowledge, good oral and written communication abilities, and good public relations skills while maintaining games according to rules and regulations.

Functions and Duties
  • Working under the direct supervision of the recreation program coordinators.
  • Attending all scheduled games and arriving 15 minutes before game time.
  • Ability to work well with youth and adults.
  • Ability to ensure the game is played according to rules and regulations.
  • Ability to determine balls, strikes, and outs and maintain games played.
  • Ability to work independently, self‑motivator, and good decision‑making skills.
  • Umpire/Scorekeeper assigned league games, and report league information to supervisor.
  • Assisting with coach's meeting and any necessary league preparation.
  • Assisting with all other related duties as assigned.
  • Evening hours.
  • Setup/take down and clean‑up of facilities after each game day.
  • Substituting as a supervisor for other programs within the recreation department.
  • Assisting with all other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications Requirements
  • Applicants must be at least 14 years of age.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Good public relations and customer service skills.
  • Ability to work with all ages of youth and adults.
  • Ability to follow basic safety precautions and procedures.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and the general public.
  • Ability to make sound decisions in sometimes stressful environments.
Conditions
  • Moderate physical activity. Ability to lift 15 to 50 pounds.
  • Position requires both indoor and outdoor work with some exposure to adverse weather conditions, walking, standing, lifting, and other physical activity.
  • Work Weeknights and/or Saturdays.
