TITLE:
SPECIAL EDUCATION ASSISTANT II/CLASSROOM
Requirements: High school diploma and either (1) official transcripts showing at least two years of college (48 units) or an AA degree, or (2) a passing score on the CBEST online proficiency exam. The exam must be completed and submitted before the Final date to receive applications for consideration.

Definition: Under general supervision and evaluation by the site administrator, performs work of moderate difficulty in providing specialized instructional support services in various pre K‑12 and adult emotionally disturbed, autistic, behavioral, bilingual, full inclusion, or assistive technology special education settings; and performs other related duties as required.
Responsibilities- Communicate regularly with instructional team members regarding daily student performance
- Work with students in group or individual settings under supervision, assisting with specific instructional tasks and accommodating special needs
- Assist students with special needs in learning or using special equipment or instructional media and tests
- Assist in developing and maintaining appropriate social behaviors using positive reinforcement techniques, activities, and materials
- Encourage and assist students with special needs in communicating and engaging in social activities such as field trips and extracurricular activities
- Supervise students with special needs during snack and lunch activities and outdoor/campus activities
- Assist students with learning gross motor skills and teaching independent mobility
- Support students of diverse levels and types of disabilities, gender, ethnic and cultural backgrounds
- Maintain and prepare records and perform clerical duties related to special education programs
- May lift and move students with special needs
- Assist in teaching self‑feeding, grooming, and dressing skills
- Assist in toileting activities, including lifting, cleaning, diapering, and supervising teenage students with sanitary supplies
- May assist with community‑based instruction
- May be required to travel between locations
- Combination of training and experience equivalent to a high school graduate with one year experience working with students, or one year of college coursework related to the assignment
- Successful completion of the Instructional Assistant Proficiency Examination and/or hold appropriate certification for the position
Knowledge of:
- Appropriate subject matter, program, and special instructional or communication procedures
- Individual differences in children
- Correct English usage, spelling, grammar, punctuation, and mathematics
- General classroom procedures, practices, and equipment
- General needs of students who are physically challenged or severely emotionally disturbed
- Techniques of learning reinforcement and behavior modification for students
- Diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of students with special needs

- Learn to interpret rules, policies, and regulations
- Valid California Driver’s License may be required
- Certification in First Aid and CPR required every 2 years
- Must meet proficiency requirements as set forth in applicable state and federal laws and District Annual Notices (e.g., Mandated Reporting, Blood Borne Pathogens)
- Must successfully pass District’s pre‑employment fingerprinting and TB testing
Sufficient vision to monitor students during activities and read materials. Hearing and speaking to exchange information and provide assistance. Ability to frequently walk, reach, hold with arms, bend at the waist, crouch, squat, push wheelchairs, lift and manipulate objects or persons up to 25 lbs., with or without assistance.
