Position: Teacher Associate (Sp Ed - Lv III)

Job Overview

Title: Teacher Associate (Sp Ed - Lv III)
Hours: Mon/Tue/Thu/Fri 7:00‑3:00;
Wed 9:00‑3:00
Location: High School

Qualifications
  • Required: High School Diploma or GED
  • Demonstrated ability to work with the needs of all Pre‑K thru 12th grade students
  • Successful completion of physical, criminal background, child‑abuse registry check, and pre‑work screening at time of hire
  • Experience working in an educational setting
  • Ability to obtain required training, including but not limited to:
    • Certification to administer medication to students
    • American Heart or Red Cross First Aid/CPR certification
    • Crisis Prevention Institute Training (CPI)
  • Ability to work with students with diverse needs
  • Ability to obtain 48 credit hours post‑secondary education or a para‑educator certification from the Iowa Department of Education
  • Supervisory experience with school‑age children
  • Successful work or volunteer experience with a disabled population
Performance Responsibilities
  • Assist with small groups and/or individual student instruction and supervision
  • Assist in maintaining a safe and orderly learning environment (classroom, lunchroom, playground, field trips)
  • Assist with classroom set‑up and material preparation
  • Assist with physical or behavioral needs of individual students
  • Operate standard school equipment (computer, copier, audio‑visual equipment)
  • Complete clerical tasks as assigned
  • Use standard universal health precautions
  • Read and comprehend at the student’s grade level or above
  • Practice being a positive motivator and develop rapport with students
  • Relate to and interact with students using positive reinforcement and effective communication
  • Communicate effectively with all staff
  • Follow Kronos rules for clocking in and out
  • Follow IEP and teacher directives
  • Remain patient and not become easily discouraged
  • Maintain confidentiality and student privacy
  • Report to assigned center as scheduled
  • Implement daily activities (crafts, board games, large‑group games)
  • Maintain a clean, sanitary, orderly and safe environment
  • Ensure health and safety of students on the building, outdoor play areas and field trips
  • Be knowledgeable about program policies and procedures
  • Record behavioral incidents (timeout, problem reports, accident reports, etc.)
  • Keep all assigned paperwork up‑to‑date and submit in a timely manner (Medicaid, student academic or behavioral data)
  • Serve as a positive role model for students
  • Participate in home visits accompanied by the teacher when requested
  • Assist in the preparation, serving, and clean‑up of breakfast, lunch and snacks as needed
  • Attend required staff meetings
  • Maintain professional growth; hold Current Mandatory Reporting Training, First Aid, CPR certification as required by state and federal regulations
  • Assume duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Teacher or Principal
  • Complete annual Bloodborne Pathogens training
Physical Demands
  • Capable of standing throughout the work day
  • Present appropriate appearance and personal cleanliness
  • Work with interruptions during a shift
  • Handle students with different personalities, capabilities, and physical/mental limitations
  • Lift up to 50 pounds to waist level
  • Carry equipment or supplies up to 25 pounds for a distance of 50 feet
  • Stand, walk (variable speeds, durations, including running), change positions quickly; sit, kneel, crouch, bend, lean, and maintain postures up to 40 minutes at a time
  • Contact body fluids (urine, feces, blood, nasal secretions) and contagious diseases (flu, common cold)
  • Use cleaning and sanitizing chemicals with appropriate PPE
  • Work in varied temperatures, humidity, winter and summer environments
  • Work in a noisy environment
  • Have physical dexterity in limbs and digits necessary for playground and classroom interactions
Clothing
  • Outdoor clothing (coats, boots, gloves, hat) depending on environmental conditions
  • Appropriate footwear where sharps, chemicals, or body fluids may fall onto exposed skin
Evaluation and Terms of Employment

Performance will be evaluated in accordance with Southeast Polk Board Policy. Employment is based on need; hours and number of days are assigned as required.
