Position Purpose

  • Responsible for the operation, maintenance, repair, monitoring, and regulatory compliance of all dialysis water treatment systems and dialysis-related biomedical equipment. Ensures life‑critical equipment, including hemodialysis machines, central water systems, and portable reverse osmosis (RO) units, meet CMS, AAMI, OSHA, CDC, state, federal, and manufacturer standards. Maintains and distributes an adequate inventory of dialysis-related supplies and equipment. Prepares and distributes dialysate for the dialysis program.

    Provides technical support for inpatient acute dialysis services, including delivery, setup assistance, and retrieval of portable RO and dialysis machines throughout the hospital.

Minimum Education Required
  • High School diploma or Equivalent (GED)
Minimum Experience Required
  • Entry Level
  • Minimum of 1–2 years of experience in dialysis technology, biomedical equipment maintenance, water treatment systems, or a related technical field preferred.
Licenses / Certifications Required
  • Certified Hemodialysis Biomedical Technician (CHBT) or Water Specialist (CHWS) required within 2 years from hire date.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required
  • Knowledge of dialysis water treatment systems, AAMI water quality standards, and CMS ESRD Conditions for Coverage.
  • Ability to interpret water quality test results and identify out‑of‑range parameters.
  • Mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills related to biomedical and water treatment equipment.
  • Ability to safely handle caustic chemicals, including acid and bleach solutions.
  • Ability to push and transport heavy dialysis equipment throughout a hospital setting.
  • Ability to read, write, hear, speak, and comprehend the English language.
Principal Accountabilities and Essential Duties
  • Manages ordering, receiving, stocking, and inventory control of dialysis‑related supplies, technical parts, and water system components to ensure uninterrupted patient care operations. Communicates with leadership, staff, and vendors regarding supply delivery and notifies leadership of unusual incidents.
  • Performs and documents all required microbial monitoring, chemical disinfection, heat disinfection, and sanitization of dialysis machines and water treatment systems according to CMS Conditions for Coverage, AAMI standards, manufacturer guidelines, and facility policy, including weekly machine disinfection, monthly distribution loop disinfection, and quarterly RO disinfection (or as required).
  • Performs and documents routine water quality testing, including total chlorine, free chlorine, chloramines (if applicable), hardness, conductivity, pH, and temperature, ensuring compliance with current AAMI standards and facility policy. Prepares dialysate and ensures an adequate amount is available to satisfy daily treatment requirements.
  • Maintains precise records of all repairs, inspections, and safety tests, and preventative maintenance activities.
  • Ensures ongoing compliance with CMS Conditions for Coverage for ESRD facilities, AAMI standards, OSHA requirements, state regulations, and manufacturer specifications. Maintains operating logs and quality control records for dialysis equipment and water treatment systems.

  • Delivers, retrieves, and assists with setup of portable RO units and dialysis machines for inpatient acute dialysis treatments throughout the hospital. Ensures equipment is properly disinfected, tested, and documented before and after transport.
  • Monitors and ensures proper functioning of the central water treatment system, distribution loop, portable RO units, acid and bicarbonate delivery systems, and associated alarms. Initiates corrective action and notifies leadership immediately of system failures or out‑of‑range parameters.
