Position Summary

The Histology Technician plays a critical role in supporting dermatopathology services by preparing high‑quality histologic slides for diagnostic evaluation. This position involves tissue processing, embedding, microtomy, staining, and performing routine and specialized dermatopathology procedures with accuracy, efficiency, and strict adherence to laboratory quality standards.

Key Responsibilities Histology Procedures
  • Receive, accession, and log dermatology tissue specimens according to established protocols.
  • Perform tissue processing, embedding, and microtomy, ensuring optimal section quality for dermatopathology review.
  • Prepare and perform routine and special stains (e.g., H&E, PAS, GMS, immunohistochemistry depending on lab capabilities).
  • Monitor and maintain staining reagents, solutions, and equipment for consistency and reliability.
  • Ensure correct labeling and tracking of all specimens and slides throughout the workflow.
Quality & Compliance
  • Follow all CLIA, CAP, and OSHA standards governing histology and dermatology laboratories.
  • Participate in quality control and quality assurance procedures, documenting results accurately.
  • Perform equipment calibration, routine maintenance, and troubleshoot basic issues.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe laboratory environment.
Collaboration & Communication
  • Collaborate closely with dermatopathologists and lab team members to ensure timely and accurate slide preparation.
  • Communicate any specimen issues, discrepancies, or delays promptly to leadership.
Operational Support
  • Assist in supply management, inventory control, and reagent preparation.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives to optimize workflow and turnaround times.
Qualifications Education & Certification
  • Required: High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Preferred: Associate’s degree in a science-related field.
  • Certification: ASCP HT or HTL certification preferred; eligibility also considered.
Experience
  • 1–3 years of histology experience required; dermatopathology lab experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience with microtomy, embedding, and routine histology staining essential.
