Michels Canada is a nationally recognized general contractor in energy, infrastructure and power construction based in Nisku, Alberta, with offices in British Columbia and Ontario. We are part of the Michels Family of Companies, a privately owned global construction company with operations across North America, Australia, Singapore, and Germany. The Payroll Clerk is responsible for accurately processing and managing payroll activities for the organization, ensuring compliance with payroll regulations and policies, maintaining payroll records, and providing support to employees regarding payroll-related injuries.

This role is based in Nisku, with occasional travel to site when required for larger projects.

Responsibilities
  • Maintaining and promoting a strong safety culture for all employees, vendors, and customers and following all safety policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Identifying and communicating workplace hazards and correcting or seeking assistance in correcting unsafe actions or conditions.
  • Gathering and confirming employee hours and leave data.
  • Working as part of the Payroll Team and assisting with processes for time data entry and reviewing for accuracy and compliance.
  • Record keeping and maintaining accurate and confidential records, including onboarding documentation, compensation changes, and termination paperwork as required.
  • Supporting Payroll activities in accordance with governing bodies and provincial standards and legislation.
  • Accurately maintaining payroll files and our comprehensive electronic filing systems.
  • Preparing payroll reports as required.
  • Upholding company culture and core values by adhering to Michels Canada’s Standards and Policies and working with others to promote and preserve our values while conducting your duties to contribute to a positive and professional work environment.
  • Performing additional duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • Certification in payroll administration or currently pursuing (e.g., NPI’s Payroll Compliance Practitioner, PCP).
  • 2-4 years of related payroll experience and/or training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Previous experience in the Construction, Pipeline, and Infrastructure industry, as well as in a unionized environment, considered an asset.
  • Basic understanding of union collective agreements.
  • Intermediate to advanced skills of Payroll systems and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to mobilize to site when larger jobs are awarded.
