Position Summary

This position is primarily responsible for the operation, inspection, repair, installation, and preventive maintenance of mechanical, HVAC/Refrigeration systems and related electric, pneumatic, electronic and computerized direct digital temperature controls. The role includes systems analysis, maintenance and repairs on HVAC/Refrigeration equipment such as air handlers, exhaust fans, humidification systems, boilers, chillers, circulation pumps, air and water filtration systems, pneumatic, electric and Direct Digital (DDC) temperature controls, temperature control air compressors, refrigerated air driers, air‑cooled or water‑cooled condensers, and evaporative cooling towers.

Additional duties include maintenance of emergency generators, plumbing equipment, lighting control systems, and collaboration with building occupants and the Buildings and Grounds Superintendent to recommend, implement, and maintain energy savings initiatives.

Job Details

Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States and may be required to pass a pre‑employment drug screen and criminal background check. All new employees are subject to fingerprinting. Salary is in pay schedule 03‑15 with a starting rate of $32.21 per hour. A twelve‑month probationary period applies.

Qualifications
  • High degree of mechanical aptitude; knowledge of computerized HVAC systems, mutual pneumatic, and mechanical systems.
  • Knowledge of the operation, maintenance, and repair of electrical, plumbing, heating, refrigeration, air conditioning, kitchen equipment, and other mechanical systems in institutional buildings.
  • Skill in making repairs and adjustments to mechanical devices, valves, booster pumps, fans, compressors, condensers, and switches.
  • Ability to operate power and hand machinery used in mechanical maintenance work.
  • Alertness to monitor for malfunctions and unsafe conditions in mechanical equipment.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions in building mechanical systems.
  • Willingness to work under unpleasant conditions, such as dusty or dirty areas, extreme heat or cold, confined spaces, and use of personal protective equipment.
  • Physical ability to perform manual labor, climb, bend, crawl, and lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Knowledge of asbestos hazards and abatement procedures.

Well‑qualified applicants will have technical school or equivalent education in electronics, HVAC, and refrigeration; four or more years’ experience as an HVAC Technician; and a valid EPA Section 608 Technician Certification.
