Position Summary

The Senior Structures Representative provides technical oversight and contract administration of construction projects, including inspection, planning, scheduling, and coordination of bridge and transportation structure work, supervising inspectors, surveyors, and materials testers, and documenting project progress and payments.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Ensure compliance with construction contracts and shop drawings prepared by the contractor.
  • Verify field dimensions, vertical and horizontal control for structures.
  • Oversee staff performing daily field inspections.
  • Prepare daily diaries and maintain inspection records.
  • Review submittals, shop drawings, product data, samples, test samples, and QA plans submitted by the contractor.
  • Assist Resident Engineer responding to RFIs from the contractor.
  • Verify compliance with regulations including CAL/OSHA and SWPPP.
  • Work independently and make decisions on construction field office matters.
  • Inspect construction progress, ensuring procedures and materials comply with specifications and acceptable workmanship.
  • Prepare reports, opinions, and recommendations for review by team leaders and clients.
  • Ensure conformance with standards, engineering practices, codes, and technical adequacy of design and construction.
  • Stay updated on new methods and developments.
  • General office administration, including report reproduction, collation, and deliveries.
  • Perform calculations and acceptance of temporary structures for bridge construction.
  • Assist in preparing contract change orders, estimates, progress pay estimates, and other project documents.
  • Coordinate sampling and testing of construction materials.
  • Prepare final as‑built drawings.
  • Perform constructability reviews.
Skills and Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
  • 20+ years of construction management experience on heavy civil engineering projects, focusing on structural elements.
  • Caltrans experience preferred.
  • Experience administering Caltrans structures construction projects and familiarity with their standards.
  • Registered Professional Engineer (PE) in California (required).
  • In‑depth understanding of structural design and construction (bridges, retaining walls, culverts).
  • Proficient in contract administration and documentation, with excellent attention to detail.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Basic computer skills (Microsoft Word, Excel).
  • Ability to work independently and make decisions in the field office.

Compensation

Engineer III – Wage Range: $85.00 – $105.00 per hour.
