Position Overview

Construction Safety Specialist – Full time, California, San Francisco, Zip Code 94105. Total base pay range $78,000.00 - $.

The Construction Safety Specialist works with various departments within Avalon Bay’s Corporate Safety and Health program to ensure compliance with municipal, state, and federal safety and health regulations. While assigned to a particular community or business unit, the Senior Safety Engineer may provide additional support to other areas as needed. The specialist identifies, manages, and creates solutions for hazardous conditions that may lead to injury, illness, exposure, and/or property damage.

Responsibilities
  • Monitors work to ensure compliance with Avalon Bay safety and health policies, programs, procedures, and all municipal, state, and federal regulations.
  • Conducts and documents the organization’s safety program inspections, and inspections required by local regulations.
  • Builds working relationships with associates, vendors, and/or contractors to foster a positive safety culture while ensuring compliance with Avalon Bay policies and applicable safety regulations. (47.5%)
  • Ceases work when there is an immediate danger to life and health condition (IDLH). Works with associates and vendor/contractor staff to correct IDLH conditions. (13.5%)
  • Ensures corrective action(s) for non‑compliant conditions and tracks corrective measures until completion. (5%)
  • Investigates safety and health concerns and incidents, ensuring necessary information is provided to the organization. (5%)
  • Reviews safety and health submittals and provides recommendations to improve written plans and documents. (5%)
  • Analyzes safety and incident data to identify trends and uses information to make recommendations for improvement. (5%)
  • Educates and shares information related to safety policies and procedures with team members, conducting training on relevant safety topics as necessary. (5%)
  • Assists the Safety Department and the organization with overall program improvement and implementation. (5%)
  • Exhibits a proactive risk management mindset and anticipation techniques. (5%)
  • Non‑essential functions: all other tasks as assigned by the manager.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Experience:

    3-7 years of safety or related experience.
  • Education:

    HS Diploma or GED equivalence.
  • Recommended:
    Bi‑lingual and field‑related certifications are a plus.
  • Knowledge, skills, and abilities:
    Ability to learn, understand, and apply safety and health principles, including identifying potential exposures and recommending corrective actions.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite, internet inquiries, email, and regulatory websites.
  • Interpersonal skills with clear verbal and written communication.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA Safety and Health regulations, national consensus standards, and municipal and state regulations.
Physical Demands

Requires climbing permanent and temporary stairs, ladders; negotiating work areas, frequent standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and climbing. Occasionally lifting or moving up to 50 pounds. Ability to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) including head protection, face protection, safety glasses, gloves, protective footwear, vest, and respiratory protection.

Licenses/Certifications
  • OSHA 30, or willingness to obtain OSHA 30 within 90 days of employment.
  • CPR/First Aid or willingness to obtain within 30 days of employment.
  • BCSP certification preferred.
Training
  • Completion of AVB’s new hire orientation within 30 days of employment or first training session offered after employment.
  • Any other applicable training assigned by the manager or director.
