Job DescriptionThis position will primarily be responsible for electronics design and support tasks for Abb Vie’s product line from concept to commercial launch. The Staff Electrical Engineer works within the Electrical Engineering group and collaborates closely with a multidisciplinary team including Electrical, Software, and Mechanical engineers.
Technical Skills- Analog design
- Temperature monitoring and control (thermistor, thermocouple, flux sensor, RTD, etc.)
- Experience with TECs and related control requirements
- Low‑voltage power control (DC‑DC, current control, voltage control, hot plug, thermal and efficiency considerations)
- Experience with mains AC voltage and current
- Strong understanding of analog component building blocks (ADC, DAC, OP‑AMP, FET, transistor, resistor, capacitor, inductor, etc.)
- Ability to review and understand existing designs from schematics
- Digital design background, capable of designing, reviewing and understanding digital designs
- Knowledge of communication standards (RS‑xxx, USB, SPI, Microwire, I²C, etc.)
- Knowledge of microcontrollers and firmware‑based components
- IEC‑60601 compliance, design and testing, EMC troubleshooting, and creation of requirements and test protocols
- PCB design requirements: DFT, DFM, high‑speed design (USB 2/3, SATA, PCIe)
- Focus on reliability, cost, and manufacturability
- Experience with high‑speed design implementation and interaction with PCB layout engineer
- Design electronics sub‑assemblies to meet performance, cost, reliability, and manufacturability targets.
- Interpret requirements documents and implement designs.
- Understand legacy designs and support manufacturing and service for troubleshooting.
- Provide technical support throughout product development.
- Participate in all phases of new product introduction (concept, architecture, documentation, design, prototype, test, supplier interfaces, manufacturing introduction, and service support).
- Support installed base: investigate complaints, perform root‑cause analysis.
- Collaborate with external vendors for design review.
- Model, design, build, test, and modify product prototypes.
- Capture electrical schematics with Altium Designer and guide PCB layout engineer.
- Create specifications, reports, summaries, risk assessments, and FMEA.
- Maintain accurate records of testing, design reviews, revisions, prototyping, and change documentation.
- Minimum BSEE degree preferred.
- 8‑10 years of relevant experience.
- Strong problem‑solving skills;
Six Sigma exposure desirable. - Self‑motivated, technically creative, and able to optimize design trade‑offs.
- Understanding of EMC regulatory requirements and design strategies.
- Knowledge of IEC 60601‑1 and related testing methods.
- Experience with AI‑assisted tools for design, simulation, and coding.
- Team player or independent contributor, adaptable to dynamic environments.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and multitasking skills.
- Competent with test equipment (logic analyzer, oscilloscope, DVM) and MS Office.
- Occasional travel required.
- Travel up to 10 % of the time; overnight or international travel may be required.
- Responsible for compliance with FDA QSR, ISO 13485, Canadian Medical Device Regulations, and other applicable regulations.
Regularly sit, stand, walk, talk, and hear for up to 8 hours per day. Lift up to 10 lbs, occasionally up to 25 lbs. Perform daily keyboard data entry. Close vision required.
Work EnvironmentWork is performed mainly in an office environment with low to moderate noise. Presence in laboratory settings is also required, involving protective equipment and safety training.
