Overview
Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA) is a highly skilled professional required to work with surgeons in the operating room by controlling bleeding, suturing incisions and wounds, and intervening if complications arise. This position is essential for ensuring patient safety and surgical success.

What You Will Do- Assist surgeon in general and specialized surgeries
- Prepare patients for surgery
- Provide patient care and support
- Administer medications
- Practice surgical procedures such as controlling bleeding and suturing incisions, draping, providing exposure, and handling tissue
- Prepare all necessary supplies
- Position and prepare the patient on the operating table
- Monitor the patient’s vital signs and heart rate
- Study patient history and health assessments
- Perform CPR or other emergency measures if required
- The RNFA may only perform as first assistant during the procedure and may not act concurrently as scrub nurse
- Employee must perform all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the C‑I‑CARE Standards of the Hospital
- Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN) – Required
- Graduate of an RNFA program accredited by the Certification Board for Perioperative Nursing – Required
- 3‑5 years experience as a Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA) – Required
Skills and Abilities
- Support multiple service lines with a minimum of two (e.g., ortho, vascular)
- Train other RNFAs
- Coordinate cases requiring RNFA taking additional CEUs
- Current professional liability insurance required
Skills and Abilities
- Understanding of standard practices and procedures
- Medical expertise in handling and cutting tissue, suturing, providing hemostasis, and using medical devices
- Can perform scrub and circulating nurse roles
- Excellent understanding of multiple surgical procedures
- Knowledge of aseptic and sterile technique
- Strong interpersonal communication skills
- Ability to work in a fast‑paced, stressful environment
- CA‑RN (Registered Nurse) – Required
- Current American Heart Association Certification for Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers – Required
- ACLS – Advanced Cardiac Life Support – Required
- CNOR – Certified Operating Room Nurse – Required
Base Pay Scale:
Generally starting at $75.21 – $100.96 per hour. The salary selected for this role will be determined based on experience, education, specialty, and training.
