Position: Principal Scientist I, Molecular Lab Research and Early Development

Role Overview

Principal Scientist I – Molecular Lab, Research & Early Development Team, Oncology and Genetics at Roche Diagnostics. Lead development of novel sequencing assays on the Axelios Sequencing platform, translating sequencing by expansion technology into patient‑benefiting diagnostics. This hands‑on, lab‑based position is based on‑site in Pleasanton, CA.

Responsibilities
  • Spearhead innovative projects and key collaborations, driving science from concept to fully realized solution.
  • Prototype and optimize sequencing assay workflows, aligning with pharma project needs and implementing rigorous experiments.
  • Proactively troubleshoot assays, resolving technical challenges using broad knowledge of molecular biology techniques.
  • Collaborate closely with commercial teams, external pharma partners, and internal bioinformatics colleagues to implement and analyze novel workflows.
  • Translate complex data into meaningful interpretations for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Support adoption of Axelios sequencing technology and growth of the pharma service business by executing pilot collaborations, creating technical documentation, and supporting assay transfer to a CLIA laboratory.
  • Identify and champion new technological opportunities, contributing to the strategic direction of R&D.
Qualifications – Required
  • Ph.D. in Bioengineering, Molecular Biology, Genetics, Biochemistry, or related field with 5+ years of relevant industry experience.
  • Deep understanding of NGS workflows beyond routine library preparation.
  • Demonstrated experience designing and optimizing novel NGS workflows and troubleshooting complex assay issues.
  • Experience with diagnostic assay development and knowledge of regulatory frameworks for RUO, LDT, or IVD assays.
  • Proficiency in interpreting bioinformatics pipeline outputs and sequencing metrics for genomic analysis.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple shifting priorities efficiently.
Qualifications – Preferred
  • Experience beyond standard library preparation (single‑cell, protein‑detection, spatial sequencing).
  • Proficiency with various NGS instruments (Element, Ultima, Pac Bio, Oxford) and automated sequencing platforms (Hamilton, Tecan).
  • Strong record of innovation, demonstrated by publications and patents.
  • Proficiency in technical writing.
Salary

Salary range for this position in Pleasanton, CA: $111,000 – $206,500.
