Position Description

The Carpenter Apprentice will learn from and assist carpenters in constructing and repairing building frameworks and structures such as stairways, door frames, partitions, rafters, cabinetry, siding, and drywall. Apprentices must pay great attention to detail, understand wood and metal properties, and perform most laborer‑level support activities. The role is safety‑sensitive.

Essential Duties
  • Assist with assembly and removal of concrete forms for concrete installation.
  • Assist with building and installing window frames, doors, door frames, staircases, stairways, partitions, millwork, trim, siding, drywall, and overall building frames.
  • Ensure flooring, roofing, and drywall layouts are leveled and compatible.
  • Read blueprints, drawings, and sketches to grasp project requirements.
  • Measure and calculate material quantities; cut, shape, and smooth wood or other required materials.
  • Handle, transport, and set door frames.
  • Load, unload, identify, and distribute building materials, machinery, and tools.
  • Shadow job assignments to build project knowledge and skill progression.
  • Assist with area housekeeping.
  • Promote a safe work environment, communicate jobsite hazards, secure the jobsite each day, and ensure proper storage of materials.
Additional Qualifications / Responsibilities
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Follow safe work practices in accordance with the Hensel Phelps safety and health program.
  • Take initiative and ask questions.
  • Show keen attention to detail and ability to follow instructions.
  • Experience with assorted power and hand tools, including ten‑pound sledgehammers, shovels, picks, handsaws, skill saws, and drills.
  • Provide own safety footwear.
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with co‑workers and stakeholders.
  • Strong mathematical reasoning and quantitative skills.
  • Reliable and punctual.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in construction layout, blueprint reading, and shop drawing reading.
  • OSHA 10 Certification.
  • CPR & First Aid Certification.
Physical Work Classification & Demands
  • Heavy work: up to 100 lb force occasionally, 50 lb frequently, 20 lb constantly.
  • Periodic walking, kneeling, sitting, crouching, reaching, stooping, and lifting tasks.
  • Frequent jobsite movement; occasional computer/tablet use.
  • Communicate with employees and stakeholders on a variety of topics.
  • Read and understand blueprints, load charts, and field measurements.
  • Climb and work from heights; maintain balance and stability.
  • Operate hydraulic jackhammers, pavement breakers, wheelbarrows, and brooms.
  • Exposure to temperature extremes, noise, precipitation, wind, dust, and chemicals.
  • Wear a respirator and pass medical fit testing.
  • Hear commands from supervisors and backup safety alarms.
