Research Scientist
We are seeking a Principal Scientist I to join our Molecular Lab, Research and Early Development Team, Oncology and Genetics within the Roche Diagnostics organization. The role focuses on developing novel molecular diagnostic assays using the Axelios Sequencing platform and Sequencing by Expansion (SBX) technology.
Responsibilities- Build sequencing assays on the Axelios Sequencing platform.
- Spearhead innovative projects and lead key collaborations, driving science from initial idea to fully realized solution.
- Prototype and optimize sequencing assay workflows, designing and implementing rigorous experiments to enable end‑to‑end solutions.
- Proactively identify issues, troubleshoot assays, and solve technical challenges using broad molecular biology expertise.
- Work closely with commercial team, external pharma partners, and bioinformatics colleagues to implement and analyze novel workflows, translating complex data into actionable insights for stakeholders.
- Support adoption of Axelios sequencing technology and growth of pharma service business by executing pilot collaboration projects, creating technical documentation (e.g., SOPs), and supporting assay transfer to the CLIA laboratory.
- Identify and champion new technological opportunities, contributing to the strategic direction of the R&D organization.
- PhD in Bioengineering, Molecular Biology, Genetics, Biochemistry, or related field with 5+ years of relevant industry experience.
- Deep understanding of molecular biology in NGS workflows beyond routine library preparation.
- Demonstrated experience designing and optimizing novel NGS workflows.
- Ability to critically examine assay workflows and troubleshoot unknown and unfamiliar issues.
- Experience with diagnostic assay development, including high‑level understanding of the regulatory framework for RUO, LDT, or IVD assays.
- Proficiency in interpreting standard bioinformatics pipeline outputs and sequencing metrics for genomic analysis.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills with proven ability to align and work across teams.
- Excellent organizational skills with ability to evaluate, prioritize, and handle multiple changing projects and priorities, delivering work in a timely, accurate, and thorough manner.
- Experience beyond standard library preparation (e.g., single‑cell sequencing, protein detection by sequencing, or spatial sequencing).
- Experience with different NGS instruments (Element, Ultima, Pac Bio, Oxford).
- Experience automating sequencing workflow on systems such as Hamilton or Tecan.
- Strong record of innovation demonstrated by publications and patents.
- Proficiency in technical writing.
- Position is based on‑site (4+ days) in Pleasanton, CA; no relocation support.
- Salary range: $111,000 – $206,500, depending on experience, qualifications, and location. Discretionary annual bonus may be available.
