Harmony Biosciences is recruiting for a Director, Tax Compliance and Accounting in our Plymouth Meeting, PA location. This position is the organization's senior tax authority, responsible for designing and executing a global tax strategy that supports a science driven, highly regulated pharmaceutical business. This role oversees all aspects of tax planning, compliance, reporting, and risk management across a portfolio that includes R&D incentives, complex supply chain structures, intellectual property planning, and multijurisdictional operations.
The Director partners closely with Finance, R&D, Manufacturing, Legal, and executive leadership to ensure the company meets its tax obligations while enabling longterm growth and innovation.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Develop a forward looking tax strategy aligned with the company's global pharmaceutical operations, including R&D, clinical trials, manufacturing, and commercialization.
- Responsible for developing and implementing internal systems to compile information and authorizes submission of tax reports to various levels of government. Develops Corporate policies and authorizes / oversees their implementation, as well as recommending ways to minimize Corporate tax liability through use of tax laws and regulations.
- Optimize tax positions related to intellectual property ownership, transfer pricing, and global supply chain design.
- Evaluate tax implications of licensing deals, collaborations, acquisitions, divestitures, and productlevel transactions common in the pharma sector.
- Maximize available R&D tax credits, incentives, and government programs supporting innovation.
- Monitor evolving tax legislation affecting the pharmaceutical industry, including global minimum tax rules, drug pricing regulations, and cross-border tax reforms.
- Oversee timely and accurate preparation of federal, state, local, and international tax filings.
- Lead quarterly and annual tax provision processes in accordance with ASC 740.
- Maintain strong internal controls over tax processes, documentation, and audit trails.
- Manage audits and inquiries from tax authorities across multiple jurisdictions.
- Oversee global indirect tax compliance, including VAT, GST, sales tax, customs duties, and excise taxes across Europe, Asia Pacific, and other key markets.
- Ensure accurate VAT treatment for complex pharmaceutical supply chains, including cross-border movement of APIs, clinical trial materials, samples, and finished goods.
- Manage VAT registrations, filings, and recovery processes in multiple jurisdictions.
- Partner with Supply Chain and Commercial teams to ensure correct indirect tax determination for product launches, distribution models, and third party logistics arrangements.
- Monitor global indirect tax developments and assess their impact on pricing, profitability, and operational planning.
- Lead indirect tax audits and inquiries, coordinating with local advisors and internal stakeholders.
- Support customs compliance and duty optimization strategies, including tariff classification, freetrade agreements, and special customs regimes relevant to pharmaceutical manufacturing.
- Establish a robust tax risk framework tailored to the complexities of pharmaceutical R&D, manufacturing, and global distribution.
- Ensure compliance with transfer pricing requirements, including documentation for intercompany flows of IP, services, and manufactured goods.
- Advise leadership on tax exposures, opportunities, and mitigation strategies related to product launches, market expansion, and regulatory changes.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required; CPA or JD/LLM strongly preferred
- 8+ years of progressive tax experience required, experience in the pharmaceutical, biotech, or life sciences sector strongly preferred
- Deep knowledge of U.S. federal, state, and international tax laws, with strong expertise in transfer pricing, IPrelated tax planning, and indirect taxes required
- Strong technical proficiency in ASC 740 and tax accounting
- Demonstrated ability to lead teams, manage complex global projects, and influence senior leadership
Physical demands and work environment:
- Domestic travel is estimated to be less than 5% of the time for this position.
- While performing the duties of this job, the noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.
