The roleAs a Senior Mechanical Services Engineer, you’ll take a leading role in the delivery of major infrastructure and engineering programmes. Working at the heart of a multidisciplinary team, you'll provide technical leadership across complex mechanical handling, crane systems, dockside infrastructure and operational support projects that are critical to the future of the Royal Navy and UK.
Day‑to‑day, you’ll an exciting opportunity to influence projects from concept through to implementation, own key work packages, mentor engineers and help shape innovative engineering solutions within one of the UK's most significant defence environments. You'll gain exposure to technically challenging projects while developing your leadership and professional engineering career in a business committed to long‑term growth and development.
- Leading the delivery of mechanical handling, dockside infrastructure and multidisciplinary engineering work packages from concept through to handover.
- Managing technical requirements, reviewing engineering calculations, drawings, specifications and design documentation to ensure high‑quality project delivery.
- Designing and integrating crane protection systems, mechanical handling equipment, access control solutions and infrastructure improvements.
- Coordinating with construction, civil, mechanical, electrical and control systems stakeholders to manage complex engineering interfaces.
- Mentoring engineers and designers while driving safety, quality, regulatory compliance and continuous improvement across projects.
This role is full time, 35 hours per week and is based on site at Devonport Royal Dockyard.
Essential experience- Experience leading complex engineering projects involving cranes, mechanical handling systems or mechanical and electrical infrastructure.
- Experience managing crane safety, lifting equipment, protection systems and mechanical handling solutions within regulated environments.
- Experience delivering multidisciplinary design projects and managing interfaces across mechanical, electrical, controls and civil engineering disciplines.
- Experience working within highly regulated sectors such as defence, nuclear, marine, heavy engineering or critical infrastructure.
- Experience overseeing design assurance, technical reviews, safety management and engineering governance throughout the project lifecycle.
- Degree or equivalent qualification in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
- Chartered Engineer status
- Desirable - Membership of a relevant professional institution
- Desirable - Significant engineering experience with the capability to achieve Engineering Council registration at Chartered Engineer level
