Middle School Performing Music Vocational Technician

The Music Vocational Technician is a classroom instructional assistant who works under the direction of the classroom teacher. The Music Vocational Technician may work directly with individual and/or small groups of students to provide instruction as directed by the classroom teacher in the band and/or chorus classroom. In addition, the Music Vocational Technician may also support the classroom teacher by assisting in the coordination and student preparation of musical performances, assisting in the monitoring of student instrumental growth, and supporting clerical components of managing student progress.

Minimum Qualifications:

• High school graduate or equivalent
• Ability to support student learning in the instrumental and vocal music classroom
• Demonstrated ability to read music and support student learning around sight reading music
• Demonstrated ability to play and support instruction on one or more instruments
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively with children, staff, public and families
• Ability to maintain confidentiality
• Good organization skills
• Ability to work well within a team environment, and to communicate effectively orally and in writing
• Ability to lift and carry up to (50) pounds at a time
• Ability to perform various activities such as constant standing, walking, frequent bending, reaching, kneeling, and squatting

Preferred Qualifications:

• An Associate Degree or higher in performing music or music education
• Experience working with students in a school setting
• Experience working with middle school aged children
• Experience teaching instrumental and/or vocal music
• Knowledge and awareness of Culturally Responsive Practices

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Assist classroom teacher in assuring that students are prepared with the appropriate materials and are ready for instruction
• Assist with overall supervision of students during class and public performances under the direction of the classroom teacher
• Provide small group and/or individual instruction as directed by the classroom teacher
• Observe and document student progress when directed by the classroom teacher
• Support students in the classroom with learning experiences and activities
• Lead specific individual or small group learning activities as assigned by the teacher
• Support student behavior through redirection, modeling, direct teaching and positive reinforcement
• Administer written and practical skill tests as needed
• Assist with classroom and/ public performance set up
• Attend appropriate professional development opportunities during the regular work day as assigned
• Bending, lifting, and overhead work required
• Performs other tasks as assigned
• Attending and supporting after-school and/or evening performances (up to six at the hourly rate of pay)
• This position may require full-time candidates to travel between buildings
