Job Description

Join AVL Test Systems Inc. as an Application Engineering Specialist. This role involves leading the design, integration, and commissioning of advanced test systems in emissions technology.

• Take ownership of large, complex, and high-impact test systems
• Work at the forefront of emissions technology and regulatory testing
• Collaborate with a global leader in automotive testing solutions
• Travel (~50%) for hands‑on project engagement and customer interaction

Candidates must be based in Southeast Michigan and authorized to work in the United States on a full‑time basis. Employer will not sponsor a work visa.

• Design and implement complex emissions and certification test systems
• Integrate subsystems and lead system commissioning activities
• Troubleshoot and resolve advanced technical issues
• Serve as a technical leader on‑site, driving projects through to successful completion
• Partner closely with Project Managers to manage timelines and budgets
• Build strong customer relationships through clear communication and exceptional service
• Act as liaison and company representative with customers
• Commission test systems, including:
  • Setup and troubleshoot test and measurement systems
  • Implement and tune complex control loops
  • Integrate auxiliary equipment into test systems
  • Setup monitoring and control of relevant safety systems
  • Create commissioning documentation
  • Provide training on system applications
  • Obtain customer sign‑off
• Write and implement complex custom tests
• Provide sales technical support
• Provide project engineering technical support
• Help desk consultation
• Develop and present advanced training
• Technical research
• Other tasks as assigned

• 5‑7+ years of relevant experience in emissions systems, regulations, testing, and commissioning
• Strong background in the automotive industry
• Deep technical expertise and passion for emissions and regulatory compliance
• Proven ability to take ownership of projects and deliver results in a fast‑paced environment
• Excellent communication and customer‑facing skills
• Bachelor's degree in engineering or equivalent
• Master's degree in engineering or equivalent preferred
• Proficient in mechanical and electrical assembly
• Proficient in vibration analysis and torsional vibration analysis
• Experience in test automation equipment preferred
• In‑depth understanding of electrical and mechanical processes
• Expertise related to testing methods and applications
• Able to read and understand electrical and mechanical schematics and drawings
• Strong software adaptation and modification skills preferred
• Background in vehicle emissions equipment, including programming or testing of vehicle or engine emissions
• Understanding of instrumentation and electrical processes
• Must possess excellent written and oral communication skills
• Thorough knowledge of PC operation, structure, MS Windows, and computer networking
