Public Safety Officers are represented under a collective bargaining agreement; the salary for this position is $46,072 with the current base pay between $43,867.20 – $56,825.60 with a comprehensive benefit package listed below.

Candidates with previous experience may qualify for a higher starting pay rate in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement. Candidates who complete Michigan Fire Fighter I & II and/or Medical First Responder licensing while employed with the airport authority qualify for a one-time bonus for each certification.

Job Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Chief of Public Safety, the Public Safety Officer is responsible for the safety and security of the Airport during their assigned shift. Tasks include, but are not limited to, aircraft rescue and firefighting, emergency medical response, and peace officer functions.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Patrols all airport facilities, including the airfield, roadways, parking lots, and the terminal building.
  • Performs general peace officer duties on Capital Region Airport Authority properties and affects lawful arrests as applicable.
  • Enforces compliance with Airport Rules and Regulations, Michigan Aeronautics Codes, Federal Aviation Regulations, and Michigan State Law.
  • Responds to all airport emergencies promptly and effectively while acting within the scope of training and licensure and meeting the requirements of state and Federal Regulations.
  • Administers emergency medical treatment, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first aid.
  • Answers telephones and provides information and assistance to the public, tenants, and outside agencies.
  • Monitors the security access control and closed-circuit television systems. Acknowledges alarms, investigates incidents, and dispatches officers as needed.
  • Prepares departmental logs, reports, and records as required.
  • Performs other duties as directed.
Qualifications Education
  • Minimum:
    Associate degree in police administration, criminal justice, or a related area.
  • Preferred:
    Bachelor’s Degree in police administration, criminal justice, or a related area.
Experience
  • Preferred:
    One to three years of law enforcement or firefighting experience.
License/Certifications
  • Minimum:
    • Has completed an MCOLES-approved basic police academy or Recognition of Prior Training and Experience (RPTE) Program and is eligible for certification as a police officer in the state of Michigan.
    • Must possess and maintain a valid Michigan Driver’s License.
  • Preferred:
    • Candidates who possess a State of Michigan Fire Fighter II certification and/or a current State of Michigan Medical First Responder license are preferred; however, all non-certificate-holding applicants are considered, and the Department will provide training for certifications and licenses. Certified in Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting.
Other
  • Ability to pass an FBI fingerprint-based criminal history background check and a Transportation Security Administration security threat assessment.
  • Must be available 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. Accordingly, the work schedule will vary depending on department requirements, including shift work, weekends, and holidays.
