The Division of Public Safety & Security is looking for applications for Police Sergeant on the UM-Flint campus. Under the general supervision of the Department of Public Safety command staff, the Police Sergeant serves as a front-line supervisor, responsible for department and officer shift activities. This position supervises police officers, security officers, communication officers, and student employees during assigned shifts and may assume a higher level of responsibility in the absence of more senior police command staff.
The salary for this position is $89,876.80.
The University of Michigan-Flint Department of Public Safety is a full-service law enforcement agency consisting of union and non-union staff.

Responsibilities- Work closely with the department’s leadership and command staff to ensure the successful, smooth, exemplary operation of the police department.
- Provide supervision to a team of police officers, security officers, and communication officers.
- Schedule, coordinate, assign, and evaluate the work of officers.
- Promote a positive work environment, ensure a high level of commitment to customer service and professionalism, and communicate regularly with officers, co-workers/supervisors to maintain an efficient and effective work environment.
- Prepare and conduct shift briefings.
- Coordinate the scheduling of leave time, training and certifications of police officers.
- Develop and maintain cooperative and professional relationships with employees, other divisional units, representatives from various departments, and outside agencies.
- Effectively respond to and resolve complex inquiries and disputes.
- Actively promote employee development of skills through training, constructive feedback, recognition for positive work, or recommendations for corrective action or discipline.
- Oversee the training of new police officers.
- Use independent judgment, initiative, and good human relations and problem solving skills when enacting and following through on decisions.
- Apply knowledge and reasoning to make prompt and effective decisions quickly in both emergency and non-emergency situations.
- Act as a liaison between other university departments, law enforcement agencies, and public safety officials.
- Maintain officers’ compliance with departmental regulations and procedures.
- Inspect, correct, and approve reports submitted by police officers.
- Effectively supports the mission and goals of the Department of Public Safety, the Division of Public Safety and Security, and the University.
This is a uniformed position that may be called upon to perform any duty that police officers are expected to perform. These include but are not limited to:
- Patrol assigned areas, observe suspicious activities and persons.
- Enforce state and federal law and University regulations.
- Conduct both preliminary and in-depth investigations, prepare incident reports, and maintain strict confidentiality of all information gathered.
- Work with other teams and shifts as needed, schedule is subject to change.
- Other duties, as assigned.
Current DPSS police sergeant or current DPSS police officer who has successfully completed the most recent UM EMPCO assessment center process; or is a candidate with:
- Minimum of two years of law enforcement supervisory experience
- Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) licensed
- Minimum of 3 years of law enforcement experience
- Considerable knowledge of state and federal law and the University of Michigan Regents Ordinances
- Demonstrated leadership and creative problem solving skills
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Proven ability to initiate and maintain productive and collaborative relationships with internal and external constituencies
- valid driver’s license is required
- successfully passed background, physical, drug screen and psychological examination (if applicable)
