University of Michigan’s Housing Security Officer

The primary responsibility of a
Housing Security Officer is to ensure the safety of residents, staff, and guests utilizing University Housing-owned properties. Officers patrol (by foot, bicycle, and vehicle) housing properties to deter crime and respond to the needs of residents through active engagement and partnership with the community. Officers are responsible for responding to and evaluating requests for assistance. They are responsible for interviewing victims, witnesses, and suspects.

Officers prepare general incident reports (for general assistance and criminal complaints) and must participate in the judicial process for criminal prosecution and internal university disciplinary referral processes.

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between U-M and the Police Officers Association of Michigan union, which contains and settles all matters regarding wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.

The pay range for new Security Officers is $43,409.60 to $44,277.79
. The full salary range for Security Officers who have completed a one-year probationary period is $46,238.40 – $53,747.20 and can be found in the POAM bargaining agreement.

Position Summary
  • The Division of Public Safety and Security (DPSS) leads all public safety functions within the university, including police, security, and emergency management, and offers an integrated approach to safety and security, operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. DPSS combines Ann Arbor, Dearborn, and Flint operations to provide students, visitors, faculty, and staff with a safe and secure environment.

Our officers and staff are highly trained security professionals equipped to serve all members of our community. We manage all security operations within Michigan Housing and offer an integrated and collaborative approach to safety and security, partnering across the University to provide a safe community while improving the quality of life for all those living, learning, working, and visiting our community.
  • Housing Security is a seven (7) day per week, twenty-four (24) hour per day operation. Work schedules may include nights, afternoons, weekends, holidays, and occasional unanticipated overtime. This is a uniformed position following the DPSS uniformed dress code. Patrol assignments may include both mobile and building-specific responsibilities.
Responsibilities
  • Under the direction of your Housing Security Sergeant and the management team, you will perform the following tasks:
    • Ensure public safety, protect our assets, and act as the primary liaison with state and local police, fire, and security agencies; act calmly in emergency situations and use emergency equipment.
    • Work closely with the Division of Student Life staff, de-escalate non-violent situations; investigate criminal activity; and assist students, staff, and visitors as needed.
    • Patrol Michigan Housing buildings and surrounding areas and monitor fire, security, and access control alarm systems.
    • Detect safety hazards and criminal activity.
    • Use your customer service skills and inclusive mindset to respectfully communicate and work with all community members.
    • Maintain confidentiality in all matters.
    • Prepare incident and security reports.
